There is no way I would trust Windows 2000 on my computer outside of a locked down virtual machine.
Thanks for the tip off about the MSFN Forum (including XP), Indianatone! I probably wouldn't have found it without your slip. It was inadvertent, wasn't it? They are clearly too big and important to bother inviting me to join them.
I'll know where to go when Windows Seven Forums stop being of any use to me.

I am putting a little something together so users can update their 7 installation media - sort of a diy SP2.
Just remember when an OS is unsupported by the developers be it Windows, Mac or Linux and so on it is VERY risky running it unless you are completely disconnected from the internet or specifically looking for trouble such as a "Honey Pot". I have virtual machines of many old OS and they are all secured and disconnected. To use XP after the EOL date will be risky as it has been the target of many attacks and as security goes down it will be wide open to hackers, viruses and malware. In a lot of cases it is already wide open as some do not keep up their updates as they are on dial up or worse. Some people will still use XP as they have no other option, perhaps a friendly geek can switch them to a version of Linux if they are unable to get a newer machine. Not everyone is made of money or has plenty of disposable income.

I know some people who would immediately differ on opinions there! Mainly they were well content running 2000 and 2000 Pro, barked at XP with some skipping over XP to go with Vista later. They loved the old OS and some are still wanting it! When 7 came out I heard from one person who was skeptical there too but ended up staying with it.
The best results I have found to date for any version having a great backward compatibility for running old stuff proved to be the 32bit 7 on the other hand. You could run old XP written games and apps that would not run on Vista in any way, shape, or form. That was with the compatibiliy mode with run as admin options tried as well as one other thing to note while 7 run the same things instantly! Found that to be true on an old boat with 128mb AGP card and onboard sound plus the XP chipset drivers all worked.
Once any version becomes too old the newer stuff wouldn't be expected to support the latest on the other hand. Thare is only so much newer that first must be compatible with the older to even work. Newer pc games tend to fare better when they included XP in order to see them run on that older version but forget 9x, ME, 2000 there! Of course the as always thing to see with any OS is once 2 or 3 newer releases or versions are out any 4th being too old just won't run things.

For simply using the Internet these days I'll bet 90% of people don't even NEED a computer any more so running legacy non internet applications on an old OS is hardly risky at all -- in any case who really wants to hack into an old OS running on a VM anyway -- where's the challenge or even the profit.
With a smart TV I don't even need my computer for watching Movies / other content as I can do this directly from the TV without a computer even connected -- and as the TV's OS is stored in ROMS there's no risk of any malware attacking the TV -- and even if there were I really couldn't give a Toss about it as what harm could it actually do.
These days Hackers are into either identity theft-- I shudder at what the price is on the Black Market of an almost undetectable "Cloned" US passport, or cyber attacks against big multi-nationals or state organisations such as CIA, FBI, the Pentagon etc.
We've got long past the days of some socially challenged sub teen writing and distributing viruses "just for the fun of it" -- and in any case if you surf intelligently and don't do the really stupid things like opening unknown email or attachments or pirate software from torrents you should in your normal computer usage NEVER get anywhere near a virus.

Gotta disagree with you some Jimbo. there have been a few times when I am doing my normal stuff and suddenly a window opens on its own saying it's scanning my system. another exploit is a window opens telling me I need to scan because a virus has been detected. some of those windows won't close without shutting down the system. Just being prudent and careful used to work, but not today.
I have seen this a lot in doing simple Google image searches, which I do a lot of for GFX work. The criminals can place, inject, bad code into most any web page. There are also the bots which can roam the net on their own looking for an open port somewhere to add to its network for some nefarious use. The so called crypt-kiddies delight in this sort of thing, the 10-15 year old people.
Games, apps, music, TV? I don't want to sound snobbish but don't people use a computer and Windows 7 for anything more intellectual or challenging any more? Video editing; websites; events posters; newsletters for an organisation; picture editing . . . to mention but a few.
No wonder Microsoft ignores the more serious users and concentrates on people who want an OS for more leisurely, less mind-taxing activities . . . !
By the way, I back Jimbo45's comment about surfing intelligently.
