Oops! May have spoken too soon.

I was able to delete a file or two and (my main concern) able send a program to the desktop as a shortcut. Things are still a bit flakey. It's 2:00 AM here just now and I'm a bit too tired to remember exactly why I say that. I'll have to play with it this weekend to determine if it's truly fixed or not.

Thanks again for your help.

No luck. Still doing the same thing. The puzzling part is that it's inconsistent. Some icons work normally allowing an option menu to appear (delete, send, rename, etc.) while others just turn the screen black for a few seconds then seem to refresh the screen. Some will display that menu but then pause a few seconds before going black and then refreshing after selecting a menu option. And yet others will do anything except allow me to edit the selected file.

Could it be something in the Service Manager I may have changed three months ago?

I've ordered a new hard drive and will attempt to reinstall Windows 7 on that ... from scratch. I also have a USB HD enclosure on it's way. My original thought was to install Windows 7 from there but it looks like the HD will get here first and I doubt if I can wait.

Panda antivirus found a "hacker trojan" yesterday and deleted it. That didn't fix the problem but it seems to have found something AVG, Avira, and Avast had missed.

I think a complete reinstall of Windows would be the best option due to the presence of a trojan, this may therefore may caused the problem in the first place. I would use the diskpart command with cleanall switch in order to have a completely clean hard-drive, if you plan to still use the old hard-drive (since your ordering a new one) or even plan to sell it to someone, the diskpart command should be used; the MBR, partitions and file system will be completely deleted.

Disk - Clean and Clean All with Diskpart Command

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Hope this helps,

Harry

The problem appears to have originated withing my Services. I had turned something on or off. Unfortunately, I can't remember which one caused the problem.

If you read the Description of each Windows Service, then it will give you an idea of what each service does, and therefore you may be able to get an idea of which service you turned off.

Start > "Search Programs and Files" > Type (without quotes) "Services"

You will produce the Windows Services shell program, and here you will be able to find all the running services. You can also click a Service Name and it will give you a description that way too.
