'Rename' box doesn't show up when I rename a file shortcut

So basically (I'll try to be descriptive), I have an Excel file (extension xlsm) on my USB and I right click it, send to --> desktop (create shortcut). I see the shortcut. I right click and attempt to rename it with a different file extension, but the 'Rename' box doesn't show up like I believe it should and the file name changes without the warning. I need to do this for the shortcut I've created, not the file on the USB.

I have 'Hide extensions for known file types' unchecked and 'Display the full path in the title bar' checked, as I believe they should be.

I hope this makes sense and hope someone can help me out here. This has been driving me crazy lately. (Sorry if this is in the wrong section; first post here.)

    Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I'm not sure that I understand - so let me repeat the problem in my words:
    file on USB drive
shortcut to that file on desktop
the name of the file on the USB drive changes
you want to change the desktop shortcut so that it works with the file on the USB drive again.

If that is what you want, then:
    right click on the shortcut
select "Properties" from the context menu
change the name of the file in the field named "Target:"

...or maybe I got it all wrong...

I have encountered this problem as well. The easiest way is to look for online help.

Are you saying that the shortcut's properties dialog box does not appear?

I think some screen prints of what the OP is seeing for the shortcut would help...

Using the Snipping Tool works well for me.
