dwm.exe is the Desktop Windows Manager. It helps provide thumbnaill, aero effect, etc on the desktop. It sounds like this file might have become damaged or corrupt. I think I'd first do a full scan with your anti-virus suite to make sure this isn't a malware issue. I'd do a second (or third) on-demand scan with Malwarebytes and ESET Online Scanner. (No anti-malware product is 100% effective 100% of the time. If there was such a product we'd all be using it. So a second or third scan might find things the other scans missed.)

If the dwm error just recently started you could try restoring your computer to an earlier date/time with System Restore.

    System Restore

You could also check for damaged or corrupt system files by running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Please post back if anything helped or not.

I think I'd just jump right to a repair install. It should preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers etc while fixing any operating system problems.

    Repair Install

Or you might consider a clean reinstall. One of the Forum experts prepared this tutorial.

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
