Golden: I ran the system file checker using the directions given (thanks a bunch, never would have found it otherwise!)

Results: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

I'm trying to avoid reformatting/reinstalling Windows since it seems that would be like trying to kill a spider with a shot gun. Plus, I'm not totally sure that would fix the problem. So, let me know if you all have any other suggestions. I appreciate your help.

    Hi,

Run Crystal Disk Info again, but take a screen capture of the screen instead and post it here.

Also download and install SeaTools for Windows, from this site (follow the instructions to install). You might be prompted to install Microsoft .NET Framework 4, and directed to the Microsoft download page. Cancel the SeaTools installation, download and install the .NET, and then install SeaTools.

Run SeaTools. Click Accept in the blank conditions box, and from the main interface, select your drive, and then from the Basic Tests run:

    • SMART Test

    • Short Drive Self Test

    • Short Generic

If these pass, then I do not think there is a problem with the disk itself, and we can then look at other issues to correct the problem/

    Golden

Here is a link to the screen cap (sorry, I'm not a member of any other photo hosting sites so I used flickr):

I'll look into SeaTools in a little bit. Work is summoning me at the moment.

candora ,you can upload a screenshot direct to the forum using the paperclip icon in the message box when you make a post.
click the pclip, browse to the saved screenshot then click upload , click the paperclip again once it is uploaded and click the image name or number that shows in the dropdown, then post reply

    Hi,

To be honest, that drive looks in perfect shape - I don't see any problems.

What sort of files are you deleting, when the freezing occurs?

Hi Golden, the freeze-up occurs any time I delete anything. Whether I delete a 1KB text file or a 3MB jpg, and it seems to occur at any location: whether it is deleted from the desktop or from some obscure folder in the D Drive, which is the data partition.

I can cut and paste files without a problem, unless I try to paste them into the recycle bin.

Did you try the surface test too? I had a clean test with Seatools on one and the surface test came up with some bad sectors so worth a try!
