Any way to re-install the whole Windows 7 registry ?

I am trying to troubleshoot a friend's computer issue.

I found out that his computer's registry is rather screwed.

Windows Installer and Remote Procedure Call totally doesn't run.

I asked him to run System File Checker in the hope of solving the registry issue..

Any other ideas ? Any guidance is appreciated

If you press F8 before Windows starts you will get a menu with several options including Safe Mode and "Last Known Good Configuration" You can try that.

    Startup Repair may also help

You can try System Restore from Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 but if that fails it will probably save time to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

You could try a system restore.

Or you can replace the hives from the regback directory ( if they are there).

Or you can access the shadow copies and copy out the hives from there.

You need external boot media to do the job.

    I do it frequently.

    Hello Raynian,

You could also do a system restore at boot using a restore point (if available) dated before the issue happened to hopefully fix it.

    Hope this helps, :)

I borked my Registry a few weeks ago. I tried System Restore and got nowhere fast. Last Known Good Configuration didn't work either. The only thing that worked was my Macrium image that I'd made two days earlier.
