Window 7 home premium (black screen of death)

Hello everyone,

I could really use some advise. I am not an expert when it comes to computers, so please forgive my lack of knowledge.
I have an acer laptop about 2 years old. Recently it was connected via HDMI (extended desktop) to a tv and I was syncing my phone using iTunes and my computer hung up, so I restarted it.
Now, once the computer starts it prompts me to login (windows login) and then I get the black screen of death with a cursor.
At first I could move the cursor, but now I can't move it. I tried to open task manager, but it appears the computer is extremely slow and barely responds and I have to restart again. Same goes for safe mode as well. The only thing that works is safe mode with command prompt. It allow me to type. So what I wanted to know was if there is any way for me to restore to a previous state from cmd prompt? Or at least if I can copy my important files from command prompt to an external drive or something. I have so many old family pics on my system that I cannot lose. Please help!!!!!!

By the way, I thought it was called Blue Screen of death, no offence Rvinod, just telling you so you don't make the same mistake again

Note that the steps Archie linked have a way to rescue your files in Step 9. You can do that first if you feel better.

Everything that can be done is listed leading up to running Factory Recovery or Clean Reinstall.

Try opening up the command prompt in safe mode and run the rstrui.exe command to restore your machine to a previous date where it was working fine.
