Migration to a New Windows7 Laptop.

Hi -

i have a Sony Vaio Laptop E Series i have been using for a while.

I originally bought it on September 2012 and i am thinking of migrating to a better one.
I have been using this laptop since then atleast 12 - 16 hours a day without break and now it's giving up (i believe).
I am a programmer and i use software like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash... these really make the Laptop slow (i believe).

I am thinking for migrating to a newer and better laptop but keeping the same setup i have..
What i need:
Recommendation on what laptop i shall buy (i know i need a desktop... but i can't have one... because of my work schedule.)
How will i be able to migrate all my current data to a new laptop.

First why do you think your current notebook is "Giving Up"? Why not Fix the current one as it is only 2 months old.


If you are set on buying a new notebook look at the Dell Latitude series as they, IMHO, are some of the best models available.

Do you mean migrate Windows and installed programs? If so, that can be done by cloning or imaging. Or just do a clean installation to the new laptop, although new laptops typically include a Windows installation.

Or do you mean personal data files---pictures, videos, email, Word files, Excel files, etc? If so, that is normally done by traditional means---backing these files up to an external drive or USB thumb drive---and then copying the files back to the desired folder on the new laptop. You may even be able to temporarily connect the hard drive from the old laptop to the new laptop and copy the files that way.

This is all manual... doesn't windows have sometime like "Time Matchine" for Mac. ???

it's two years old... and i am not sold on buying a new one... but i would rather get this one repaired/fixed if possible.

I have only a vague idea of Time Machine---some sort of way of returning your system to a prior state I think?

Yes, Windows has something like that.

But the questions I first posted remain, namely: do you want to migrate ONLY personal data files or do you want to migrate your Windows installation? Or both?
