Motherboard and CPU update to Run Windows

Hi, A friend has an Asrock K7S8X motherboard on his old computer, and would like to upgrade his computer to run Windows 7. Could anyone suggest an economical replacement motherboard/Cpu which is directly interchangeable with existing one (dimensions/mounting etc.). He is not a "gamer" and just requires it for storing files and internet access.
    Thank you, John

it looks like a standard ATX motherboard, and so you should be able to replace it with any ATX motherboard.

The problem is it appears to use IDE for hard drive connections, which is now obsolete. There still is motherboards out that have IDE (also called PATA), but most don't. You won't be able to run any recent intel processors, but there are some that support the latest AMD processors...

I know very little about AMD, but what about this?

Here are the specs for that mobo...

    ASRock > K7S8X

It's an old, old mobo. You will also need not only a new mobo and CPU but new RAM as well. This looks like it will turn into a complete build do to the age of the original.

Not sure what the UK has for online PC parts but here in the states we have tigerdirect and newegg and both of them have excellent part and complete builds ready to assemble.

    Asus M5A78L/USB3 AMD Socket AM3+ 8 Channel HD Audio.. | Ebuyer.com
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz Socket AM3.. | Ebuyer.com (note that you should get a discount with this CPU/mobo combo - £145.50)
    Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz HyperX Blu Memory.. | Ebuyer.com - £27.69
    Gigabyte HD 7750 1GB GDDR5 VGA DVI HDMI PCI-E Graphics.. | Ebuyer.com - £80.90
That would be £254 not including shipping. I'm fairly sure this is a decent budget Windows 7 system, but I'm a little hazy on AMD systems.
