Solved Windows folder > Properties > Security TAB got messed up

I was experimenting some settings on Windows folder > Properties > Security TAB and then i suddenly i forgot how to set it back to the previous settings.

How can i restore the default settings on the security tab?

Hello Jan,

Do you remember what changes you made?

If not, then you could do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before you changed these settings to restore them back to default.

no i do not remember what changes i have made ): that is why im asking how can i restore it to default settings. Actually i have made the changes long time ago so there is nothing that System Restore can do.. Is there any other option?

Are you having any issues with it?

Since this affects so many items in the Windows folder and you not knowing what you changed, I would say it may be best to leave it alone unless you are having issues.

If you are, and since a system restore is not an option for you, then you could be looking at a repair install to fix this.

When i download a file and save it directly from Program File folder this is what happens

So instead of saving it directly to Program File folder, it saves to my Document folder. How can i prevent this from happening?

Sorry i didnt mentioned that i also made changes on my program files security tab.

That isn't from the changes you made. That is because of the security settings already in place when you install Windows. You could however change the security settings on the program files folder to allow everything to write and read from it. HOWEVER doing so will open a security risk as viruses install into this folder and having lower security rights is a way of preventing infections.

Jan,

As ThermoDust posted above, that is the default behavior designed to protect your system files from any unauthorized direct access/modification from an external source.

By default, you can only save directly into your user folders from any external/internet source.

I would strongly recommend to not change the security settings for this. It will leave your system files completely vulnerable. I personally save to my desktop first then move to wherever I like.

Hi guys, i tried it on my fresh installed Windows 7 Ultimate using Virtual Box and i tried to download the same file i was downloading on my previous reply and save it directly to any program folder in Program Files and it saves it directly. If its the default security settings, then why is that it let me saves directly on program files using fresh installed Win7 Ulti? Thank you.

A virtual machine is not the same as a normal installation on the PC itself.
