I don't know the use of this

Hello All, I recently installed fresh copy of win7 ultimate 64bit. Installation went well. Everything is fine. But, when I went to My computer I see all my partitions and with that I see a small partition of 90 MB that says "System Reserved". I checked that in Manage Drives option as well and nothing was mentioned about that partition.

I want to get rid of it. Can some one please help me.

    Hello Archer,

While normally it's 100 MB, the System Reserved partition is included when installing Windows 7 on an unallocated disk.

This System Reserved partition serves two functions. First, it holds the Boot Manager code and the Boot Configuration Database. Second, it reserves space for the startup files required by the BitLocker Drive Encryption feature. If you ever decide to encrypt your system drive using BitLocker, you won’t have to repartition your system drive to make it possible.

If you do not need the above, and truly want the small 90MB space back, then the tutorial below can help show you how to remove the System Reserved partition. I would recommend to not remove it though.

    System Reserved Partition - Delete

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

For the small amount of space you will get by deleting the "System Reserved" partition, I suggest you leave it as is. Playing with partitions can cause serious issues.

It's your computer, so do what you want to do, this is just a heads-up.

If it's already there, I'd leave it alone. Next time you do a clean install, you can follow the diskpart method to make sure it isn't created (if you really don't want it).

I would highly recommend, that you do not remove the System Reserved partition, as always mentioned by others, the System Reserved partition is very important as it contains the Boot Manager, and without the boot manager you will need to perform a Startup Repair and other hassle to make your computer bootable again.

Thanks all for your replies. I won't remove it now. But, is there anyway I can hide it in the explorer window?

    Do you mean Disk Management?

    Glad we could help Archer.

You could remove the drive letter for it to no longer be displayed in Windows Explorer. You can't stop it from displaying in Disk Management though.
