Welcome to Seven Forums rob777. First I would run the System File Checker

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If it finds errors it cannot fix, be sure to run it several times as needed.

If that doesn't help, you can try restoring the correct file associations

Default File Type Associations - Restore

You state it's a new computer; as in, just opened the box and plugged it in for the first time? If that is the circumstance, take it back to the vendor and get a new working unit. Otherwise, post back with more details, such as; did you install a new program, did you do a Windows update, did the system crash? Did you get a popup window stating you have a virus and need to run a scan? Do you have an Anti-Malware program installed? What are you using for AV protection?
