System Restore point is set before each group of Windows Updates so the procedure if they foul out again is to Restore to before the last group then install them in smaller groups to isolate the problem Update, working down to single it out. Then post back the Update here and via Email support on the Windows Update site to resolve the problem.
Email support is slower but has the benefit that you can work at your own speed. I once spent a month resolving a friend's Updates issue in Vista via email support with no pressure or rush. MS will not stop until it is resolved even if they have to bring in an engineer.
This is not a reason to avoid Updates which impact both the security and performance of your Windows 7, and is how Windows 7 delivers newer
drivers that are critical. Instead set them to Download but not Install until you have the time to work through them, first in groups and then singly to isolate the problem.
