Explorer crashing when deleting files

what that usually means is some of the DRIVERS for you system will not work correctly. And depends on your version of Win 7.
Drivers are 95% of all problems. & your using the x64 version which has more problems and x86.

I had the same problem with an older build aswell (could have been 7100) and that was with my old board. The problem went away after an upgrade though so i may just do another fresh install.

UPDATE- it just froze while adding a file to media player playlist so it must be something with the right-click problem people have been having

What I can find, the RightClick x64 hangs-dead-freezes or what ever you want to call it .... the major are using AVAST.

Im using Nod32. Its just strange how it happens even when using the 'del' button on the keyboard aswell. Going to try dragging files to the recycle bin a few times to see if there is any crashes doing that.

If only there was some way to troubleshoot crashes without vast amounts of trial-and-error

If only!! Well there is no problem dragging files to the recycle bin i have tested many times now. Its only when the 'Are you sure you want to move this file to the recycle bin?' box comes up soon as i click 'yes' or even if i click 'no' then it just freezes!

h20s04 -- can you help me? I am trying to follow your instructions but my knowledge level doesn't allow me to follow your steps. I apologize in advance! :)

I installed the debugger and cd'd to the directory and typed in the command and it gave me a message that seemed it accepted it. I then closed the window. I now have a command prompt looking screen that changes when I right click. It has a bunch of entries that are tagged as "1st chance dll_unload exception"

Ironically enough, I right clicked and got the explorer crash right after installing the debugger program and typing the command.

Not sure where this dmp file is and I can't reproduce the problem at least for now.

Can you assist in -- for starters helping me get the proper dmp file on here?

Sure mate, I'll do my best to help, but some of these crashes are very impractical to debug without being seated in front of the machine.

As a suggestion, start your own thread on this in the "Crashes and debugging" section of the forum, as there are a zillion different reasons why Explorer might crash and most of those are going to be relatively unique.

At least the memory dump may be useful in helping MS zero in on the cause of your specific crash, even if we can't diagnose precisely what's wrong.

Follow these steps to try to generate a useful dump (it's a bit more involved than the original write-up I did in this thread):

1) Download and install either the 32-bit or the 64-bit "Debugging Tools" package, depending on your OS type: Debugging Tools for Windows - Overview

2) Open an elevated (run as admin) CMD prompt and CD to the folder where you installed the debugging tools.

3) Run this command: gflags /p /enable Explorer.exe /full

4) Reboot, or at least terminate and restart the Explorer process.

5) Run this command on the elevated CMD prompt:

cscript adplus.vbs -crash -nodumponfirst -minionsecond -quiet -pn Explorer.exe

6) Reproduce the "real" Explorer crash.

7) Find the new folder in that same location with a DMP (memory dump) file.

In that dump folder you should find 2 DMP files:

a) A massive one (hundreds of MB) with "1st_chance" as part of its name.
b) A much smaller one (few MB at most) with "2nd_chance" in the name.

It's (b) that is of primary interest. Zipped up, that file may only be a few hundred KB in size - small enough to upload here.
