Windows does not reboot after each time I shutdown.

    Hi all!
It makes several months am using Windows 7 Professional on my Dell Studio XPS 1640 (it's a 64bit system). It was working fine and I was happy with it.
It makes some weeks now that after each time I shut down, when I turn on again, it boots up to where the 4 coloured logo appears and then am left with a dark screen with only the cursor. I once waited for nearly 1 hour, nothing changed. The users screen never appeared.

I had to turn off manually, and when I turn it on again, it tell me that windows failed to restart.... and am left with these 2 options:
    >start Windows Normally(I went back to square 1 when I tried this)
    >Startup Repair.

The automatic system repair did not find any problem, I had to use the system recovery for which I had to choose a previous date in time to which I want the computer to reboot. Some times it works, sometimes I have to do it again and change the date.

When I hibernate the laptop, there is no problem when I turn it on again. But when I shut down or restart the laptop, it boots up to the "starting windows" screen with the windows logo and I have to turn it off manually.

It is causing me a lot of problem, I cannot install any program, each time I have to reinstall my printer.

Please is there any solution for such a problem?

Sounds like a hardware problem. Could be the motherboard but more then likely the hard drive is starting to fail. Try replacing the hard drive and see if you can reinstall a good working copy of 7 on it and that it starts up properly after shut down.

I think that "system restore" sometimes works is just a coincidence. Try to start "normally" each time. Or let computer cool down (maybe it's heat related). I think it boots "normally" succesfully sometimes(?)

So you boot up, you see the windows animation screen (for how many seconds?) and then black screen. So no logon screen? Only blinking cursor on top left of screen, no mouse? What happens if you try to boot in "safe mode"?

@Kaktussoft I have tried letting it cool down. It makes no difference. The animation screen stays for about 20, or maybe 30 seconds. The black screen is with the mouse pointer on it (sorry for the confusion). I can move the pointer with the mouse and the touch pad. When I started windows normally, I got the same problem, that is, it boots up to the animation screen and I had to turn off manually again (I tried this several times). EACH time I shutdown and turn on again I get this problem, each time I tried to start normally before trying startup repair and it did not work. The startup repair never finds any problem automatically. I have to go to advanced options each time to choose system recovery.

allright no cursor at all. Only a moveable mouse pointer. (many people call that a cursor as well).

But how do you fix the problem (at least temporary)? By doing a "system restore", or startup repair? startup repair didn't find any problem, so that can't fix it.

Sorry, that screenshot isn't necessary now.

    Got to Elevated Command Prompt
    and do:
    Code:
    sfc/scannow
It takes a few minutes to complete. Integrity errors?

    Also in elevated command prompt
    Code:
    chkdsk/f c:
Any errors? If so.. run it again. Now no more errors?

To fix the problem temporarily, I use system restore to a previous date. When its done, the laptop restarts and it boots normally to the logon screen. When I logon I get a notification box which tell me system restore was successful or something like that. The startup repair never finds any problem and does not solve anything, when the computer restarts after the startup repair it boots up to the black screen again.
