    some questions

    hello!

    i have just installed Win7x64 (i know i am delayed a bit )

    first, i have some questions:

    1) it seems Win7x64 downloads every day updates and asks to reboot in order to finish installation, which is annying, can i set it to install only after i reboot manually?

    2) can i set CTRL+ALT+DEL to just open Task Manager?

    3) i connected a hd and i was not able to run exe's in it, etc
i wonder, if i have logged in as administrator, why it still requires for permissions, since they are set as 'full' for admin accounts?
anyway, i set full permissions for all users and that fixed the problem

    4) i disabled index service manually, but how do i stop notifications 'your search may be slow' ? also, how do i detele the data of indexing service that are stored and are now useless?

    5) i am not sure if i use AHCI, and if yes, if i use it for all my drives and any drives i add in the future
in my BIOS i last time have set manually to IDE
i also, no longer get the bios notification to enable AHCI when i start my pc
    please advise

also, do you have any advice you can give me for my new OS ?

    thanks!

    1) Open Windows Update, go to Change settings on the left bar, and instead of "Install updates automatically", select "Download updates but let me choose when to install them". You will still need to install updates, but they won't automatically install and nag you to restart.
    2) You can just use CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
    3) This is UAC (user account control) asking for permission. It is recommended that you do not disable it, but if you need to, go to Control Panel, User Accounts, Change user account control settings, and then disable it.

    useros, Welcome to SF.
    1) W7 once installed will in fact need extensive updates to come current and many of those will require a reboot. I would allow all these updates to run and then only when a major update comes along will it either update or alert you to same depending on how you've set up your W7 updates.
    2) See above answer.
    3) Sounds like you just need to go into your UAC settings and lower them.
    4) Another may have this answer for you
    5) My mobo defaults to IDE for all my drives even my SSD which I'm told will perform better via a AHCI setting but all my drives are working perfectly in IDE mode. I would set a SSD to AHCI and see if the setting will stick and if not set it back to IDE and just leave well enough alone.

Read through the best practices for Win7 install given in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
to see how close you came to getting a perfect install. If not I'd do it over following the steps given only using the tools and methods which guarantee and perfect install.

Win7 is lean enough that you should not have to turn off any Win7 features or services on adequate hardware.

Enter BIOS setup by tapping key given on first screen to see if AHCI is enabled on HD.

If you have permissioning problems on an added data HD, run the Take Ownership Shortcut on it.
