Windows 8
What's the down side to installing Win8?
there is lot of disscusions about windows 8.. lot of people saying that windows 8 is bad some people think its good.
well most pushed and obvious thing you will notice in windows 8 that is optimized for touch (tablet etc).. the start menu was replaced by start screen and reminds windows phone. start sceen is a full sceen thing with big squares that has icons or if software supports it relevant information (live tiles). it has strong push to MS marketplace and cloud but still not required. Full sceen touch optimized aps with no way to make windowed mode.. but there is desktop you know from older versions of windows.. aero and start button removed.
Windows explorer was upgraded and now has ribbon interface.. file copy move etc operations better optimized.
on some installs windows 8 boots faster due too hybrid boot and some other boot optimizations.. some people say that windows 8 feels snappier but its hard to notice especially if you have ssd.. it feels same as windows7.
As a novice and without touch screen monitor on my desktop, I guess I need to stick with Win7. I'm sure Bill Gates will be disappointed.
The real downside to upgrading any OS is the time it takes you to get use to the new way MS has decided to change things. It was bad enough going from XP to 7. But from any version of Windows to 8 is a BIG change.
I have a friend that just started using 7, he was using XP for the last 10+ years, and he calls me 4-8 times a day with questions. Win 8 is a whole different ball game.
Stay with 7, you'll be happier.
Devices that add touch navigation to existing systems are just starting to become readily available. Examples:
Newegg.com - Microsoft PL2 Wedge Touch Mouse 3LR-00004 Black Touch Scroll Bluetooth Wireless BlueTrack Mouse
Newegg.com - Logitech T650 910-003057 USB RF Wireless Touchpad
I'll be interested in seiing whether this changes the perception of Windows 8.
(Who would want a touchscreen desktop system anyway? I can't imagine that my shoulders would stand 8 hours of that.)
Win7 is the best OS ever, feather-light and instantaneous without hesitation with a good install on adequate hardware.
Win8 has a SmartPhone touch-screen interface which is not intuitive on a regular desktop or laptop, forcing you to drop a jarring wall down on your work to access the Start menu, unless you install a third party Start Menu like the excellent Windows 7 Start Menu for Windows 8.
