what is the best OS for gaming on this rig?

    hi,
today I'm going to re-install Windows on my second pc. It has got:

    - Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 @1.86 GHz
    - 3 GB DDR2 Dual-Channel @667 MHz
    - Asus P5LP-LE motherboard
    - Ati Radeon HD 4870 X2 (actually using only 1 core)
    - 600W PSU
    - 300 GB Hard Drive @7200 rpm
    - Windows 7 Professional 32 bit

my question is: what is the best OS for gaming on this pc? My choiches are:

    Windows 7 Professional 32 bit
    Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
    Windows XP Professional 32 bit
    Windows XP Professional 64 bit

    Hi,

It depends entirely on the games - they need to be compatible with the OS. As a rule of thumb, I would recommend Windows 7 32 bit because:

    • you only have 3GB RAM (64 bit won't give you any more benefit)

    • Windows 7 will allow you to run many applications under compatibility mode

Again, check the specific game requirements - they ultimately dictate the OS used.

    Regards,
    Golden

In terms of performance, is Windows 7 faster than Windows XP?

It depends on the game, and hardware, but in general terms...yes.

Can you upgrade your memory ? Will you max out your memory in the future ?

I would reinstall 64 bit b4 you go installing all your programs and games.

4 gigs max, I would still install 64 bit.

Windows 7 OS has better CPU usage and efficiency in terms of processing.

With multiple core cpu's Windows 7 and upper is recommended.

I actually have 3GB of RAM, and the max I can use on this motherboard are 4 GB... But I'm not going to upgrade this pc anymore :)
