Windows resets every time I startup

Hi. Im not very good with the technical stuff but this is what's happening. Last night I was carrying around my laptop in my back pack, I had put it to sleep. I get back home and I start it up but the computer had shut down completely and it restarts the normal way. After I put in my password it takes about 10 mins for it to open my desktop. Before it did it said that it was preparing my desktop, To see that it had completely restored all defaults. All my files are there and programs like vlc media and games. Google chrome was gone. I then find my battery is loose. So I pop it back in and it shuts off again. I switch on once again and the same thing happens. I've restarted and logged off and logged back in. But I cannot restore my computer back to how it was. I also get a warning that this is a temporary desktop and any changes I make will not be saved if restarted. Any body who can tell me what's going on?
