    Buy W7 for netbook?

    dumb question: can I download W7 like I can W8 from Microsoft.com..?

I can't seem to find a link to purchasing/downloading any old W7 versions, everything points toward buying W8..

I have a Dell Mini 10V and I'd like to upgrade it from WinXPsp3 to W7..

Unless your netbook has at least 2 GB of RAM (most had only 1 GB of RAM), you will be disappointed with Win7 on it. You would be better off buying a Win7 machine while they are still available.

It does have 2G of ram, but I read many other reports on this very board about how well W7 runs on their Dell Inspiron Mini 10 or 10v..

Is there no download option for W7?

You get it here free, Official version. But you'll need an activation code : Official Windows 7 SP1 ISO from Digital River « My Digital Life

Probably be better and easier to go buy a hard copy.

I have Win 7 installed on three of my family's netbooks that have 1.5G of RAM and it runs very well, no issues or disappointment in performance whatsoever.

I'm not sure where you can buy and then download a copy of Win 7 but I see the boxed version still for sale on various sites such as Amazon.

I had W7 starter on exactly the same notebook. Ran with no issues. Ended up putting Ubuntu Remix on it, the netbook was more suited to it IMHO.

There are plenty of online retailers still selling Windows 7.

I run Windows 7 on the very same, notebook* with only 1GB or RAM. its runs perfectly fine within my expectations. Of course I cannot run too many things at once, but for what I use it for, it is perfectly fine. Be sure to run Aero, do not turn it off. Off loading the GUI to the GPU as much as possible is a big plus.

If I can download W8 for $40, why does W7 still cost $100+ from another retailer?
I should be able to download W7 from the Microsoft store for a fair price..

That $40 upgrade price is a temporary "incentive" to lure people into moving to Win 8. MS has no desire to lure you into buying Win 7 at this time.
