What is the full specifications of your system? If you have 512 mb of RAM or more, it's doable, heck, DocBrown installed Windows 7 on friggin dual pentium II at 400 mhz, so why not?
Now, it will be very very frustrating to use, even a netbook will fly circles around it, but hey.

I probably will run, but even if it works, it would be REALLY slow, as that system is well below the minimum requirements for Windows 7.
XP will run fine most likely.

is it a brand name tower ,if so what is the make and model #
you should be able to open the tower and remove the cpu fan and the socket type should be written on the white plastic around the cpu ,if its a intel ,it will likely be a socket PPGA 370
