    OK, let's try.

Can you type in Japanese after switching to it with ALT/SHIFT?

Nope, that's just my point. There is completely no way to type in Japanese.

Reason: I cannot open any of the menus on the language bar. Therefore I cannot control or set the input methods. And of course I cannot tell it what form of Japanese (phonetic system or Chinese characters) to output.

Same problem as I've had all along and the reason I can only conclude that the IME is corrupted and therefore needs to be reinstalled. But how to do so? It's no longer a download option, since technically it's been downloaded and installed. My only option is to buy it from the MS website as a stand-alone package.

OK, I have done some testing, mainly trying to reproduce your issue. No luck there, can't reproduce it. The Japanese input works like a charm, both using keyboard and IME input pad:

Please note that as I have told before in my previous posts, no language packs are needed for this. Both the desktop and one virtual machine I used to test this have an English Windows 7 and no Japanese language pack, although the desktop has Finnish, Swedish and German language packs installed for other user profiles but I tested Japanese input on a user account using English as display language.

My recommendation now is to disable Japanese IME, reboot, run sfsc /scannow as many times as needed(*) to fix all possible errors. After that a reboot, enable Japanese IME, open WordPad and try.

(*) SFC /SCANNOW sometimes needs several passes to fix all issues. If after scan is completed you get a message telling that SFC could not fix all errors, you need to run it again. SFC / SCANNOW needs to be run from elevated command prompt. Tutorial: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

    Will do.

Revealing my ignorance here: I didn't know that SFC /SCANNOW actually fixed errors. I only thought it revealed them.

For what it's worth I uninstalled the Japanese Language update completely (it now shows as an update to choose, which I will not) --- and --- I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Japanese IME many times.

Still the same problem: "Click on the icons and they only "shudder" as if trying to open to reveal menu choices. But do not actually open."

I'm so desperate I actually thought of dedicating another computer I have to XP and doing things with that IME - it never gave me any problems. Either that or just shoot this damned computer!

Kari, I'm sure you're really sick and tired of me by now. If so, I can sure understand it. We do have one thing in common though. We both refuse to accept failure.

This I can do - and have done as well. This IME drawing pad is in fact the only icon that actually opens when clicked upon. The other Input and Output choice just shudder for a nanosecond but never actually open. But the IME pad does actually work.

    No problems.

SFC (System File Checker) itself does not fix errors, it only scans. The magic is done with the /SCANNOW switch. Sometimes it really needs a few passes before it finally says "SFC could not find any errors".

When testing, be sure you have an text input application open and active, word processor or such; if no apps that accept keyboard input is active, the language toolbar wont let you use the menus.

Do the SFC scans and come back to tell what happened. To be sure SFC really has the chance to fix possible errors, reboot after disabling Japanese IME, run SFC scans, again reboot and first then enable Japanese IME again.

Found SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Didn't realize what a seriously good group this is. I do now. Thanks.

Ran sfc /scannow and the results are scary - lots and lots and lots of unrepaired problems.

Will boot. Run sfc /scannow again - and again until all problems are resolved?

Aside: You know, I walk out the door and am seriously impressed by how many idiots there are in my country. Then I participate in some of these groups (primarily OCN and Win7 Vista) and I realize just what an idiot I am myself.

You do not need to reboot between SFC scans. Do it only before the first scan, and after the last one, although no harm done if you reboot even in between the scans.

Don't let me start about idiots in the country I am currently living...

How many times do you recommend running sfc /scannow

Before it's enough - or you just give up?

    +++++++++++++
Would this be helpful or would I risk needing to do a reinstall? Not willing to reinstall btw.

SFC / SCANNOW will tell you when it can no longer find errors:
