The on-line Dell documentation for this model does not list the BIOS or options. I've posted a help request in the "Rockstars" section of the Dell forum. I'll post back when I get an answer.

You should remove the service tag from your post. Dell considers that personal data and its forbidden on the Dell forum.

I wonder if there are hidden bios settings that are controlled by things such as windows updates. This problem started after the installation of KB2753842. But I have removed that patch, and it didn't resolve the problem.

Windows update should have no affect on the BIOS or "setup" as Dell calls it (F2 at power on).

Here is the info from one of the Dell forum experts (Teddi):

I have seen this happen before, and it is fixable.
Have him go to control panel, Windows update, Change settings, and change the important updates to any setting he wants, except the install updates automatically. Have him set a time in the install new update when the laptop would normally be on. Have him run disk clean up and preferably ccleaner. After a restart he shouldn`t have this happen again.
He needs to go into task scheduler and uncheck the setting for the pc to turn on automatically for updates

    • pc is shutdown
    • pc is not power off but still has power. Like a television in standby mode
    • Power on is in your case a timer in bios
    • It's not configurabel as it look in bios
    • Maybe a windows setting can actually change a hidden bios setting

I did everything suggested, I changed the update to download but let me choose when to install, the time which was set to 3PM is greyed out, I ran cccleaner, but could not find anything in scheduler to turn on automatically for updates.

At 3AM this morning, the computer powered on. I was so hopeful!

I have posted your results to my friends on the Dell forum. I really think you should be posting this on the Dell forum directly for assistance so those familiar specifically with Dell's can have a shot at this. Laptop - Dell Community
