Can I purchase Windows 7 Upgrade?

Hi all,

Hope someone can help me! As a UK student I can from today purchase a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium [Upgrade] or Windows 7 Professional [Upgrade] 32/64-bit for 30. This is a fantastic offer and one which I am hoping to take advantage of.

I have a laptop that came pre installed with Vista Business (there is a legitimate serial stuck to the base of the machine) but after months of frustration with the OS I wiped it and installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit RC1, which I am delighted with.

The problem I now have is, if I purchase Windows 7 Pro Upgrade will I be able to install it? The website gives the option of a direct download for 30 or a direct download plus something called a "Disk Kit" for 39. If I have to do a clean install anyway, will it matter that I'm not running Vista or XP? Do I need the disk kit or does the download come in the form of an ISO which burns to DVD like the RC1?

All help gratefully received, thank you!

I think one way or another, you would ultimately be able to install 7 using the upgrade version so I would go ahead and get that.

Yes, the download should be an ISO so once you download 7, just burn it to a DVD using a free app such as imgburn. No need to get the "disk kit."

What brand and model is your laptop?

Most OEMs have a recovery partition which will allow you to re-install your origional OS.

The latest word from MS (no one knows for sure until Oct 22) is that you will have to install the Win7 upgrade onto a XP or Vista installed and activated OS. We all hope there is an easier way, later re-installations might require your Vista to be installed first. It's still 'might'.

If you don't have the recovery partition then contact your OEM and request your Vista Business re-installation DVD, most will send it free.

Vista Business is upgaded with Windows 7 Professional.

From the MS site:
Quote:
What are the "equivalent" Windows 7 products for Windows Vista?
Windows Vista Home Premium -> Windows 7 Home Premium
Windows Vista Business -> Windows 7 Professional
Windows Vista Ultimate -> Windows 7 Ultimate
So, Yes, that's a great deal. Get it as soon as you can.
You don't need the DVD kit, as harpua mentioned. You can burn it yourself.

Might consider installing it with a USB memory stick. It's easy and fast.
