Hello, I have an HP EliteBook 8530p that was doing fine until my boyfriend closed it whille I was in the process of downloading a music program. Now when I cut it on it says Windows failed to start it might be a recent hardware or software change. So it tells me to run start-up repair which I did for 4 days straight with no results.I can pull up all of my installed repair software but I cant get into safe mode and when I did that chk thing it said everytjing was ok except for a code 50.all my lights, fan, and hard drive are working.I bought it refurbished and it was already upgraded from Vista 2 WIN7 home premium.I have tried to get into my BIOS but it keeps asking for a password and I never eveb set one up.It says there are no recovery points or images to restore to and I dont have a Win7 disc but do have the license key on my notebook.Any help would be greatly appreciated as I cant afford any replacements.Thank you.

My mom purchased it for me from EBAY from a place called Tampa Laptop Storefront. It originally had Vista Buiseness OEMAct on it but they upgraded to Win 7 home premium.I dont know a whole lot about pcs. This is my first laptop and I am starting to realize just how advanced and technical this one is and I dont need half of the stuff it has on it.But I am really hoping that this is just a bad case of user error and can be fixed as I have only had it 2 1/2 months. They were supposed to send me the disk but didnt.I have contacted them by email and they responded saying they were going to help get it straight but still no calls or any emails so i'm stuck and technically challenged. Please Help!

The bootrec commands are in the troubleshooting tutorial. Now run Startup Repair 3 times after confirming the Active partition.

Confirm the 100mb System Reserved partition is marked Active if you have it, if not confirm C is Active using Option 2 in Mark Partition Active.

Then run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times until Win7 starts. If you marked SysRserved active and it won't start after 3 tries, move the Active flag to C to try again x3.

If it won't start this way or using the other steps in troubleshooting tutorial, move on to Factory Recovery option or the Clean Reinstall I linked earlier after rescuiing your files if necessary.

I am trying to get into my BIOS and it keeps asking for a password and i have never had one so when i try to just hit enter it pops up something about sparekey recovery and that also asks for a password?

When during the process to boot into and run HP System Recovery
does it prompt for a password?

You can rescue your files first using Step 9 in the Troubleshooting tutorial.

If HP Recovery doesn't run or you'd prefer getting a much cleaner and better performing install then do the Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which does not require any password at all. I would leave the HP Recovery and Tools partitions, format and reinstall to C.

i cant even get into system recovery because its in the bios and i dont have a password.it isnt showing any files at all on c: but d: which is my partition or whatever does show windows. im scared about doing the system recovery as i dont have a win 7 disc only a key and the pc im on wont let me use my dvd/rom so i dont know what to do.i even tried unhooking the bios and all that to reset password and it didnt work.any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Use the Win7 DVD provided to do the repairs which doesn't require a password at all.

Plus, if you didn't create a password then just click next and skip that box.

She doesn`t have a windows 7 disc, as stated in her 1st post.

If 7 was installed on a Vista PC, I doubt if it has a recovery partition on it.

You never answered my question of which key you have ?????

What do you mean by "Unhooking the bios" ????

Hi Melissa,

You said the computer you are posting ON, that the DVD drive doesn't work. Do you have any empty (or ones that could be made empty) 4gb or larger USB Flash sticks ? WE could get you to make a WIN7 Install USB Flash stick instead of a WIN7 Disc. Another thing that might be helpful would be a Bootable Partition Wizard Disc or USB Flash stick that could be used to view your present HD configuration. I know this all seems overwhelming, but there are enough of us GURUs here with a combined knowledge that can solved 99.9999999% of all problems. We will work slowly with you so you understand what you are doing & feel comfortable doing it.

The Win7 installer to burn to DVD or write to flashstick is provided in Step 1 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 tutorial

What I would do is rescue your files if necessary as also shown in the tutorial, then from the booted DVD with everything else unplugged do a Custom clean reinstall following the steps in the tutorial closely.

In particular you'll want to delete all partitions as shown in Steps 6 and 7 of Clean Install Windows 7 http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html#post1839164 then create partition(s) as you wish, or just click Next and Win7 will create and format one large install partition (as well as a small boot partition you can ignore).

Melissa it's important to read and understand the steps involved closely. Feel free to ask back any questions until you understand everything thoroughly. If you get the install perfect with our help, then you can save a backup image to use in place of future reinstalls, so you only need to get it perfect once.

Thats the problem i am having is my home computers dvd-rom isnt working so i have been trying to find someone with a 7 disc i can borrow.this is so frustrating and upsetting.i mean i know i am older but i havent gotten a lot of nice things and this notebook was literally my prized possession.im staring to feel like its driving me crazy.now that the holidays are over im going to blow up amazon and tampa laptops emails until they respond.they were supposed to send a disk and didnt.thank you for all your responses and if i am able to get a hold of a disc i will definately need your guidance in correcting this and some advice on how to protect my pc in the future.Happy New Years!!
I dont have any flash things and by which key do i have the vista key is still on the bottom but it has a clear thing over it w/ a stamp telling me not to use that one and then i have windows 7 home key also on the bottom.im thinking that when they upgraded to 7 that they removed vista because i have never seen anything aboutiti n this whole recovery process.and the bios thing was i watched several videos on you tube that showed you how to unhook bios and it was supposed to reset my bios but it didnt

I keep trying to tell you that the Win7 installer is provided in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 so why are you now going on about having to borrow or blow up the retailer to get a DVD? Just download the ISO for your licensed version and burn it to DVD using the tool provided. Then follow the steps to get a perfect reinstall.

If it's the DVD drive which isn't working then write the ISO provided to a 4gb flash stick with the tool provided.

Did you ever try to run HP System Recovery? If you don't have a password just click Next.

The blue type above are links which contain illustrated tutorials on how to do these things.
