even if i use classic themes... and disable any kind of 'eye candy' the performance still isnt as good as in xp.
W7 turns my .. still-a-legend 8800 into a mid-range, if I wish for everything to run perfectly smooth in W7, what should I upgrade? GPU I guess, but is ram and cpu ok?
I'd take Tews advice if it's that bad for you and leave Win7 alone...
It's hardware requirements are less than Vista's so if it feels slow to you maybe it's not your cup of tea...
That or your machine may have underlying isues.
Just my opinion.
you don't need to upgrade, you've got a beasty system as it is. As others have said, maybe windows 7 is not your cup of tea. But from your system specs, it should be running great.
could it be that the driver you are using for your gpu is not designed for windows 7? the problems you have described seem to resolve down to your gpu. Did you look for an updated driver on the manufacturers site?
I concur with antt.
Validate all of your drivers. Your machine should be responding better and you are well within the performance envlope of Win7.
Judging an Op system based on the performance of a single game is kinda silly. The vast majority of games, especially the newer ones run better on Win7 IMO. Remember that Win7 isn't even out to the public yet and the drivers have a ways to go.
I would clock that Q6600 up higher and get a better GPU if you want better performance.
I found about a 10% drop in frame rate going from XP to Vista using an 8800GTX, Then going from Vista to 7 the frame rate was the same (Though faster because after 3 years the drivers were better).
Since then I upgraded my video card and have a blistering frame rate in 7.
So if there is a frame rate drop it is surely due to the state of the drivers. Older cards may not get properly updated drivers to the new WDM for Vista/7 and so may really suck in performance... But cards in the last 3-4 years with updated WDM drivers should perform ATLEAST 90% as well if not better bey now.
