Windows 7: working of harddisk

Windows Ultimate 64 bits. AMD RADEON 1 GB
 
 
working of harddisk

as you see in the picture that there is a needle over the circular disc so my curiosity is that what makes that needle move here and there, and doesn't it will be out of order before the hard disk. doesn't it make scratches while moving so quickly over the disk? please remove my curiosity

thanks for the vdo link but still some queries is that what makes it vibrate so fast and doesnt it scratches the harddisk? and when hard disk fails , then is it beacause of failing disk or this needle?
