online file storage?

Hey 7F,

Can anyone recommend any good online file storage's free of course.
I need somewhere to store my files and the only place I can think of is DropBox but am sure there are more out there?

Thanks

*Not sure if this is the right place to post this*

What size storage do you need? Google Drive might be an option too.

Hi there
Google drive is fine for sharing data (might even replace Utorrent in some circumstances although that's not its purpose - but it shows how difficult it would be to stop P2P file sharing !!).

Remember though that ANYTHING that goes out onto a remote server passes ultimately beyond your control and you never know where this data ends up with or what is done with it ultimately. For example a small innocent remark even posted as a joke can come back and bite you YEARS later -- for example you might in days of your youth have described Ms as "the Evil empire", and a few years later when more mature might have decided getting a job with Ms isn't a bad idea -- but you get turned down because someone somewhere found that remark you made years ago on some file server.

For small innocent data volumes its fine -- remember though if either you or google has network problems you can't access your data and in the future people will be looking to make money out of the service so beware to be bombarded with commercials or be offered a "Ad free Premium service" at some future date.

Always keep a backup on local storage too.

Cheers
jimbo

That would be something seeing Google drive as a P2P But am sure google checks their files?
Agreed! But am not very organized and I just need somewhere I can store my files so if I do happen to delete them or something at least I have a backup
I normally use DropBox and am very happy with them but they start you off with very low space and its a pain getting others to join you for 500MB each (Free account max space 16GB)
Of course I keep my imported files on my USB HDD but as computers go, One day my HD may fail.

I was going to use the online storage for my photos as do my PC is a mess with them and in the past I have by mistake deleted ones I really need.

Right now it's down to Google Drive Or MS. Ms has more space with the 7gb so I may go with them?
Basically am looking for online strong with a good bit of space for free and won't be deleted.

If using free cloud storage, I suggest that you encrypt your data before uploading it in case someone hacks into your account. I generally don't recommend free cloud storage sites because they have a history of disappearing with little or no notice, especially the photo sites. Using a free storage site is especially dangerous if it is the only place you have your data. Putting duplicates of your data on more than one site would reduce the risk to an acceptable level.

i would go with skydrive and dropbox,
both these companys are very large and its unlikely they will dissapear in a hurry, google isnt likely to dissapear soon either.

im fortunate to have 25gb of skydrive and 29gb of dropbox, but the skydrive and dropbox folders remain on my pc, they are just synched to the cloud also, so if the computers blow up or something i can still get a recovery of my pictures etc.

I know that cloud storage is the new rave but it doesn't make sense to me. A person saves things because they are important to them and they want them safe. The safest way would be something like another hard drive or SSD that you have complete control over. Then you don't have to worry about it getting lost in internet space or cloud that might disappear or some one might hack and do their foundling. You control what computer the hard drive is installed on and who get to see and or use it. You can also store you valuable hard drive off site but yet accessible when needed without using the internet. I remember when a business person made backups every night and took them home just in case someone broke into the business or a fire happened. Now their information was in the computer at work and stored at home using a backup. Both under complete control of the owner.
