boot gets stuck on desktop - no icons

Weird problem . Sometimes when I boot into windows , I get the desktop but no icons , and the cursor point is a spinning circle . Or I will get icons but it seems to get stuck loading . How can I troubleshoot this . Is their a program to see what is causing the issue when booting ? Thanks people ..

It's not a boot problem... it's a problem after logon. Is mouse pointer spinning for many minutes and never stop? You are not able to do anything? Do you have other user accounts on machine? If so... same problem with other accounts?

I can move the cursor around but can't click ctrl / alt / delete or anything . I only have one account on this machine . The mouse pointer will spin forever , well not forever but for at least for 10 minutes before I press the reset button ..

Work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 starting with the Clean Boot.

Report back results of each step as there may be others indicated.

If none of the steps help, consider getting a perfect reinstall following the same steps for Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Can you press ctrl-alt-del and run taskmanager? If so click on tab "applications" and create a new task. Type in cmd and press OK
    type explorer and press OK

    Do they run?
