    Dear Forum,

I wish to advice that I am completely out of options - having gone through some of the files that I wished to extract - some are encrypted by the people that run the software. I am pretty disappointed that they do this. I am able to gather some partial items, but apart from that - I am devastated.

    I know for next time.

I have attached my tickets for the software company.

I will just try what you have suggested in the meantime.

    Thank you everyone.

    This is what they said
    Hi Melissa,

Your backups were created with Memeo Instant Backup, not Memeo Backup Premium. Also, you cannot restore the data with Memeo Backup Premium, since the backups were created by Instant Backup. From your screen shots, your data is located on the Seagate external hard drive.

Did you try restoring using Memeo basic program, not the Premium edition?

What files are missing in the explorer view they showed you how to access, and which I have repeated earlier?

Is it possible that you didn't back those files up using Memeo since they should be accessible otherwise?

Are the originals available? An automated backup like Memeo is normally only mirroring the data on the drive already. You choose what to include and leave out.

I see what you are saying.

I am going to have to look at the location what did you say before YOUR USERNAME_Backup

I am finding some of the data like Antivirus and some other encrypted data that will not let me into the file. Some of the file types are not supported or digital.

    I will look at tomorrow.

I have spent another lot of time trying to recover what I could.

    Lesson to me

What approach did you suggest again?

I do not know also know how to use the Memeo Basic program. Just trying to figure that out.

With the screen shot it shows some encryption.

    Dear Forum,

I have been advised to run a CHKDSK on my disk and also go into the the Computer Management section of my computer by the Manufacturer and also now the software company also wants more information.

They are making it a little bit difficult. First of all they say I have to wait. So I went on the forum and they got cranky at me on the forum.

Anyway I am posting everything to date.

I am hoping that I do not loose any information and that going into the different modules they instructed me has not caused any issues.

I am at a loss - like my data - so I will keep you all updated with what is happening

I will now retire for the night.

Thank you all for great ideas and you have my respect

You were advised to run Disk Check from Partition Wizard on the external along with HD Surface scan in Post #20 in this thread. You reported back multiple bad sectors. I then advised you to run the File System Check (as Disk Check is called in PW) with both boxes checked but never heard back the results. I would run that now, either from Disk Check or PW CD.

Have you copied all of the data you need out of the external yet? You've been told how to do this by the manufacturer and its been repeated here almost too many times to count. I would do that first before the Disk Check with both boxes checked.

I have copied some sections - but some items are unable to be copied as they are encrypted.

I will run the CHKDSK again - I did that first - and was advised to have both boxes ticked.

I am slowly going through as there is a lot of data to transfer and find.

They also said not to mess with the back up files - so I am finding it hard what to do.

Thank you keeping at me. I will shoot myself if I did not have assistance.

Did you copy everything you need out of the Melissa_Backup folder as their tech support said below? That is where you were told you could find the data you chose to back up.

I have now asked you this three times. Are you able to do this?

I was referring to this approach. Did you go there and try to drag out your files to the other HD?

Thank you for contacting Memeo Technical Support. Your original backup was created by Memeo Instant Backup. The backup cannot be restored with Memeo Backup Premium. You should be able to find your backup files through Windows Explorer, by accessing your Seagate drive directly. Your backup folder should be titled as <YOUR USERNAME_Backup>. If you navigate through the various folders, you should be able to locate your data.

No I am not able to locate any of that data - hence following up with both the companies.

I am doing what they have instructed.

I am doing the best I can. I am very ill - going through chemo and radiation therapy and my brain is not up to speed. I know that it is required to be done as soon as possible and I am working my way through it. I will report if I have ny problems and if I require assistance.

You have been great with the PW - never heard of that before - will post screen shots after finished.

Thank you and I am sorry for the lack and speed and depth of my posts

The very first folder here is the backup folder that Memeo says should have your files inside:

Try clicking on all the sub folders in it until you find your data. The dated file looks most likely:

They have said you can't run the backup because you're using their Premium version. Have you tried installing the lesser version to run backup? How did you upgrade to Premium version? Look on that Downloads page for the lower version to install and run it to get your data back. If it's not available there ask them for the Download link.

OK there are two suggestions here. Please work on both of those and reply back to each so everything is tried this time.

In response to Gregrocker's last post in suggesting you try the lesser version to restore the backup I believe it was Memeo Instant Backup used originally going by the quote above.

If you have the programs installer on your PC or a External Drive then good, use that, if not you can download a trail version from here - Automatic data backup and recovery software for your home - Memeo Instant Backup

If you still have the Premium version installed and running you should close it first. This is what Instant Backup icon looks like, which you would right click > Quit.

I downloaded trail version to check it out and it may be limited and may not work, I don't have a full version to compare, but if it does when you open it may automatically find the drive with the backup or you may have to select it if you have more than one drive containing backups. Click "View Backup Files" which will open Explorer in the backup location, verify you are working with the correct drive.

If your working with the correct drive, move on to restoring.
Format of a disk issue code-memeorestore1.png

If you have the Hard Drive space I would recommend "Restoring All Files" and go though them later to move out the files you want to keep. You may have more than one backup so you will need to do each one separately I believe.

Format of a disk issue code-memeorestore2.png
I would recommend restoring to a new location not the original one to avoid overwriting any changed files. Click browse and create a new folder with a meaningful name, open the folder and click "Select Folder".
Format of a disk issue code-memeorestore3.png

Now click restore and repeat for each backup shown in my 3rd screenshot if you have more than one listed. The later backups should contain the newest files so you should be able to restore each backup to the same location and overwrite all, just make sure you work with the oldest to the newest.

The only problem restoring to a new location is you will have to go though them and compare the restored versions to the versions you already have on the computer. You could select "Select specific files to restore" in screenshot 3 and restore only the encrypted files that your unable to copy manually from the drive, but it's up to you.

If at any stage you have problems or errors, stop and post the problem and someone may be able to help with that.

    I hope that helps.
