I have clarified that an Memeo Autosync was performed some time prior to the USB Seagate Hard Drive (500GB) failing.

I have been instructed that it is still on the drive. I am afraid after pyschical inspection by an approved reseller the drive is not available to reinstall the data.

So I have been labouriously looking at folders and path names and dates - and volumes and what format I saved them as. There was a near full volume - prior to the drive failing.

I never knew I depended on it for so much.

They did say not to go into the background folders - but I am thinking that this would not be applicable at this stage. The trail version looks similiar to the one that I have - but the path that you are going down is great.

I am afraid that the deleted folders - will just have to remain as that - deleted. I have backed up all data on my lap top straight as the method suggested in previous posts.

My little lap top is having a time and crashing - as some of my documents are large. It was a time to do a tidy up. I think the recycle bin was full on the drive as well.

I am sorry that I have not posted for a while. But had to have my chemo today - at least I had something to pass the time.

The dashboard that I also had up - the developer had not instructed me to suspend all installed products - so some were running in the background.

Thank you for the post above.

It would be great to have one of you nice people to say a big thank you for being patient.

Will keep you updated - slowly going through this process.

Should I restore the Antivirus encrypted folders and hidden files?

    Hello Forum,

I am just updating the situation with my retrieving of data.

I am having trouble identifying the files and the date that it was modified changes - is that correct if I am going in and retrieving some of the files and copying them to another location so that I can work on some important paperwork.

I appreciate the assistance that I have been granted by the group.

I also have lost some files - but that is the breaks.

I guess I am lucky it is just data I lost - nothing like the house or my life

I am having trouble with the documents and trying to review the data. I am going through the manual method as that is what the developer has suggested.

I am still not too sure and have not heard back regarding the data change in the date of modification. I am not too sure that I am doing it correctly.

My documents keep crashing and I am not too sure why that is. Would it be because the system is unstable?

That looks like you're in Office and have had a crash requiring it to repair and recover Office files. What does that have to do with recovering your files from the external? Are you trying to open Office files you've recovered from the external?

If the File System and Surface scan checks you ran earlier are correct then you have a badly damaged HD from which it might not be expected to fully recover all files.

I am trying to recover the files that are in the path of the other back up from Memeo - it has caused a most unstable environment.

I like your reference to the software as crapware - I now agree and will go by what the forum members have recommended - best thing I ever did was joining this forum.

I am so sorry that I have wasted your time with the past post. I will update the status and leave it.

I guess I will just also see about gaining more memory on my lap top.

    Thank you.

    Dear Forum,

I have just noticed that I am gaining documents that are now called Back up of any document that I create - is this just a completely random thing that Windows is doing. I am saving the Word documents -- I am currently trying to find a forum for Word assistance as they keep crashing.

If you could please have a quick look at the screen shots that would be great.

What do you suggest I do as I am getting scanning messages again on another drive on the UCB drive that the old external drive was on.

Thank you. I am still trying to recover data.

I also have a copy of an event viewer of some crashes - not too sure how to read the report.

Something is running a backup of your Office Word. Have you set up any other backup programs besides the Memeo on external HD?

Type scheduler into Start Search box, click on Task Scheduler. In left pane, click on Task Scheduler Library. Look at the list of Scheduled Tasks to see if you can see the backup, click on it to explore each tab to understand how it's set up. Then if you don't want it, highlight the task in list and Disable it on right toolbar.

What "scanning message" are you getting and on what drive? Run a Disk Check to check the file system.

No it's not random, you must have"Automatically create a backup of Words Docs created" enabled. I notice you use Word 2003 and Wird 2007. Which one are you using here?

If your using Word 2007 or above then as the files are named "Backup of FILENAME.wbk" it sounds like Word is set to create a backup every time you save the file, which is what I think mitchell65 is saying in the above post.

    Save backup copies

You can set Word to automatically save a backup copy each time you save a document. Saving a backup copy can protect some of your work if the original document is damaged or deleted. The backup copy is the version of the document that you saved prior to the most recent save, so your most recent changes are not available in the backup copy. However, the backup copy prevents the document from being entirely lost.

Note If you delete the original document without saving it, the backup copy will not include any changes you made since you last saved the document.

Backup copies are saved in the same folder as the original document, with the file name Backup of document name.wbk. Each time you save the document, a new backup copy replaces the existing backup copy.
Source - Save and recover a backup copy of a document - Word - Office.com

To check and undo this follow these steps,

    1. Open Word and click File
    2. Click Options on the left side
    3. Click Advanced on the left
    4. Scroll Down untill you find the heading "Save"
    5. Untick "Always create backup copy"

I am using MS Word 2007 and I have enclosed the screen shot from the task manager and the word settings.

I have documents that are as large as 200 pages - some that I have cut and pasted from the internet so that I can print them later and read them.

Thank you for referencing the advanced settings on MS Word 2007
