The old "a picture is worth a thousand words" seems applicable in this situation. Please post a screenshot.

Usually these "squares" mean that your computer does not have the necessary fonts for a certain language.
( ie : trying to run a program in an asian language on an English system)

And when did this start.? Recently? Was everything OK before?
Is everything affected or just some programs?
A little more information would be good.

As stated , a screen shot would help. But have you tried a system restore to before this started happening? Have you ran any malware/virus scans?

Looks like you have lost your Fonts folder or you have a virus. indianacarnie in the above post asked: But have you tried a system restore to before this started happening? Have you ran any malware/virus scans?
Please reply to this. If you have run the scans what was the result?
Also: Can you type in the search box that opens when you click the start button or does that just show the squares?
