Yes, carwiz. I have been using CCleaner. wdc just returns file not found message
Hmmmmmmmm, you should have had a bunch of things come up with the "wdc". I just did mine and got approximately 15 hits. I still would try a system restore myself but if you would rather not ......... have you considered a repair installation?

(As also suggested to you by Layback Bear. We posted at the same time I guess, second time today this has happened with me )

I'm not sure a Windows repair install will replace the missing files but you might give that a try if you don't have a restore point prior to your "testing" of CCleaner. Otherwise, a clean install may be in order.

Lesson here; Don't run CCleaner without supervision. :)

Thanks for the help and suggesitons, everyone. carwiz, I've been using CCleaner since it was called Crap Cleaner (probably 8 years or so) and have never had a problem. I'm reasonably informed and generally methodical in my approach to computer management. Yes, I have restore points if I need them as well as a complete system image made directly after a fresh install and set up. I'm perfectly aware of multiple ways to resolve the issue, but that wouldn't tell me exactly what the problem was to begin with which is essentially what I was asking for help with.

Indianacarnie, I've located all of my manifest files in C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests and there's bunch of 'em along with a bunch of Security Catalog files.

Is there something in particular you think I should be looking for?

My bad, Indianacarnie, this is probably what you were asking for:

Do you have a custom theme installed?

    Try enabling an aero them.

    Britton30,

Seems like kind of quirky fix, but that solved the problem. I was using the Windows Classic theme. You truly are a guru. And I've learned some cool stuff in the process from the rest of you other guys as well. Thanks, one and all.

LOL, I'm glad it worked. You might try a reboot and retry the classic theme again to see if it will work now.

Maybe I will later, but I've decided it's just silly to put together a machine like this one, that can easily handle the load, and then try to squeeze an extremely modest increase in performance out of it by limiting various functionalities that actually make the overall computing experience more enjoyable.

    Thanks again,
    Nick

My sentiments exactly! (I love the Aero myself) Glad everything is kosher now.
