When the laptop is in hibernation what happens if you press a key, not the On button?

Have a look at this guide:
Why is hybrid sleep off by default on laptops? (and how do I turn it on?) - The Old New Thing - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

Turn off Hybrid Sleep, if it is enabled.

    See if that helps.

EDIT: Also, unplug all external peripherals like printers, USB devices, etc. if they're connected when the PC goes to sleep/standby.

It's probably running a Customized HP Power plan that like all of their preinstalled crapware is buggy as hell. Change it now to Win7 Balanced power plan, set Sleep to 30 and Hibernate to 60 in the Advanced Settings. You can test it first by setting them to 1 and 2 minutes.

Make sure you have the latest Display and all other drivers, by enabling Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) and then running all Important and Optional Windows Updates to completion.

If this doesn't help go to the HP Support Downloads webpage for your model to import any newer Display driver.

But the problem is likely that the HP preinstalled Win7 has the worst load of bloatware and duplicate utilities in the industry, which throttle and corrupt Win7. That's why most tech enthusiasts Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Until then I would Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

In BIOS, make sure the Suspend State is set to S3.
