Solved Password required but set up for password not required?

I am working with a Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit desktop computer. I have the settings to never go to sleep and to go to a blank screen after 10 minutes of being idle. I have it set to only require a password on boot up. It's been working fine for over a year. Now it is requiring the password every time a key is hit to bring the screen back up. I have checked the settings at least 4 times and they have not changed. I hope someone can help with this before I go completely bald from tearing my hair out!

That was not unchecked. I unchecked it and tested and it still wanted the password.

You might not have this setting:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings

Change advanced power settings

That one I actually have marked as "no". I also tried a re-boot and it still wants the password.

Now that you have rebooted - please check to see that the setting held as shown in this post.

If that is still unchecked, then I hope that you enjoy being bald

I'll see if others know the solution. In the mean time, please tell us what antivirus software you have installed.

LOL I'll get a warm hat! All the settings stayed the way I set them. Anti-virus program is Norton 360. It is updated and run at the very least once a day. Thank you for checking if anyone else has had this issue. If, by some miracle, I find out what the problem is I will let you know.

I was hoping that your AV software had changed and was forcing this password issue... but I don't see any mention of that type of feature in Norton 360 via Google.

Hmmm, no takers. It looks like you are stuck with me.

...create a new user profile and see if the settings work in there.

Check in msconfig/Startup for what starts with Windows. Do you have a password on any of them?

If you have a pass word on your account, remove it, reboot and see if it asks for a (non-existent) password. If not, replace the password, maybe a new one, and test. All with the setting to NOT ask for after waking, from screensaver, etc.

Hi TD, welcome to 7F!

Try disabling "Validate Password" in "Identity Safe" There is also a setting for Passwords and Security.

UserID, I am not ready to run the system checker at this point. Hopefully that will be a last resort. I did make a guest user and the settings work fine there. No password needed when coming out of screensaver.

Britton, I didn't see anything in msconfig. I will have my husband look at it. Maybe a new set of eyes will catch something. I did remove the password on boot up and it didn't ask for a password on screen wake up. I put the password back on for boot up only and made sure everything was set properly to not require a password on wake up. And again it wants the password when coming out of screensaver. So maybe we are narrowing it down.

Anak, Thank you. Identity safe is for internet. That wouldn't affect the system settings?

Norton ID Safe may have an influence here. I don't use 360, just Internet Security and don't use the ID Safe since I found it to be intrusive. Try Anak's suggestion, you can return to the former configuration if that;s no help.

Have you setup passwords in Windows Vault? Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Credential Manager

As Britton stated "Norton ID Safe may have an influence here", I don't use it either, but you need to look at any, and all programs that require a password.

I don't mean to start anything :zip:

, but have your husband look at it, he may have installed something and forgot to tell you about it.

You can use SFC/VERIFYONLY
That will let us know if something has barfed within the OS without making any changes to your system. However, this scan is less important given your findings with a new profile.

UI, it was probably a typo, but that command should have a space between;
SFC and /verifyonly:

3. To Only Verify if the System Files are Corrupted
NOTE: Scans and only verifies the integrity of all proteced system files only. This command will not change your system files as in the red WARNING box at the top of this tutorial.
A) In the elevated command prompt, type sfc /verifyonly and press Enter.

Thank you for pointing that out. I make lots of typos that spell check does not catch & I hope that I'll always be open to correction - especially when it can impact the results of a scan or test.

As far as I know, the space is optional. The same is true for IPCONFIG/ALL and a few other such commands/switches. I should probably try to use the space when posting online to avoid the appearance of an error - but I don't use a space when I actually use the SFC command or the IPCONFIG command on computers.

Let me know if omitting the space can cause issues.

I just tried it on my nieces notebook I'm repairing and you know it does work I stand corrected, but I have run into machines that wanted that space.

On my computer leaving out the space work in cmd prompt but is needed when using Power Shell. I have no idea why that is. I have never known of sfc /scannow ever hurting a system. It is Windows 7 checking and repairing it own files if it can.
