Monitor turned off automatically along with processes

This is the first time I had encountered such a problem. Booted the system around 10-20 mins back, had few FF windows open along with 4-5 tabs on each.

Had cmd prompt running on,feedreader, winamp = its a common day-to-day routine procedure for me

All of a sudden, my monitor turned off, winamp was no longer playing any music. Keys wouldn't function. Laptop didn't get turned off... as I had to hold the power button for quite a while before it turned off. After turning back on.. it asked the routine System Error = Safe Mode, Normal mode procedure, I chose normal mode.

Laptop battery was charging - even though I didn't use battery for quite a while now. I am aware it charges once in a week or 2 usually.

I would like to know why the hangup or what ever happened, so that may be in future I can stop it from repeating, as I could be in middle of something important unlike today. Is there a way I can check the reason for it ?
