    windows explorer view settings

Is there any way to prevent the 'view' setting in Win 7 from being global and changing every folder in the computer. I have three win 7 machines and they all do it. And why did 'thumbnails' become 'icons'??

    Hello Ridgerunner,

Are you by chance in a library instead of an actual folder location?

All included folders in a library will share the same folder view.

Only while in the actual folder location will they have separate folder views.

For example, Music library versus "C:\Users\(user-name)\My Music" folder.

Could you give more details about what you mean for thumbnails becoming icons? A screenshot showing this would be best.

Hope this helps for now, :)

    Folder Template

Have you set your "Folder Templates"?

    Tutorials

1 - Choose the details and view that you want

    2 - Choose the Template
3 - In "Folder Options" choose "Apply to folders"

Thanks for help. These seem to work for this new Alienware machine. I can set folders individually and changes are not global. Still not sure it works on my 2 yr old laptop or my Alienware laptop; changes in them seem to be global regardless and it is infuriating to say the least. What I mean by thumbnails is that Microsoft seems to have redefined the term, which no longer is in the menus. Thumbnails are now icons. In my mind they are two very different things and always have been. When you now select icons you get thumbnails. These view changes were a lot easier and more intuitive in XP; you could just go to view then 'customize this folder' and make it as you wish. Takes more searching now. Perhaps most folks just 'get used to' these additional complications but I find them a waste of my valuable time. I'll work on my other machines and see if I can figure this out.

If you like, you could turn thumbnail previews off to only have an icon instead.
In addition, you could use the tutorial below to add enable/disable thumbnail previews to the context menu to make it easy to quickly enable or disabled them at will as needed.

I'm getting some of these things figured out and they're working. You guys might actually might make me like Win7 if this keeps up.... Seems that what I want is here but is just more hidden than it was in XP. I figured out everything I ever wanted in XP but not in Win7.

Here we go again. Now I'm being denied permission to look into my networked new win7 machine from the older one. It shows up but says I don't have permission to get into it??? Password sharing is turned off. This is so aggravating. I'm trying to work and make money and instead I'm running up and down the stairs trying to figure this out. It seems with win7 all the roadblocks are by default in place instead of it being up to me which are in place, and I have to figure out how to get through them. I have work to do and this is not working. Excuse my frustration but it seems it's one thing after another.

This sure is a convoluted mess. I can get the new computer to show up in the old one's home group and Network but when I try to look into the new machine it wants a username and password... Username?? I didn't set up a username for anything. I have a network password that shows up on both machines. What a screwed up mess.

Oh my. Since this isn't the same issue, I would recommend to create a new thread for the network issue for us to better help with there instead. :)
