How long does it get stuck? Sometimes Windows has to clean stuff up or shut down a process or program that is not responding. This can delay the process a considerable amount of time. The problem with doing a hard shutdown (holding down power button until it shuts down) is that it perpetuates the problem and the next time you go to boot / shut down, it can take longer than it should because of improper shutdown the time before.

First thing I would try is leaving it alone and seeing if if it DOES eventually shutdown on its own. Don't have to sit there and watch it... if after 10 min it's still not shut down, then I'd start looking into it. But once it is allowed to shut down normally, it should shut down fine the next time.

This might also help, if it DOESN'T shut down:

Work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 starting with establishing a Clean Boot, checking the Performance log for clues to what's hanging shutdown, check for cued issues on Advanced System tools page, Generate a System Health Report, use the other System resources to search for Solutions to problems and gather clues.
