I should really start thinking about the programs I download

You are correct, My Home Premium OS does have more functionality than your Basic OS.

See if you can get into: Window Color and Appearance - Change using Option One.

There is a difference between the tutorial and my OS, I don't have the Change color scheme link that Brink is showing to use, and I hope he used a version of Home Starter/Basic to write the tutorial.

I have to use Option Two, to get to Step 7, and the Advanced Window Color and Appearance Settings Box.

I was going to suggest option two, but your Basic OS in all probability doesn't show the windows Color link you need to click on to get there.

Xeal Clianad the fact it never comes up tells me you have a corrupt installation of Windows. The malware you got before probably messed with some registry setting buried in the depths. I have Windows Home Basic 64 bit on a Virtual Machine for these very questions. I thing you should try SFC /scannowor read thru previous posts and consider a reinstall. Gregrocker has great advice on his post.
