Sorry late reply mate had to go out for a while now one last thing I know it says Sony VAIO and we need the model number (probably on the underside sticker) because those specs are not telling us what the motherboard version is. That needs to be known to see what chipset is on that machine and I can see that if I can Google the model number. Plus any drivers.

The other thing is what sort of mouse are you using wired or wireless? and the make / model, and have you tried another mouse or even just the touchpad? .

The CPU is running a tad on the warm side (for my liking - probably not for others) as my 1st generation i5 powered Toshiba is at 47C on the CPU.

Just for the time being keep this address in a document or somewhere it is the NVidia Ge Force driver for your graphics it might come in handy later.

Ok sorry for late reply stony and mate do you mind telling me just where you are as I can see we are in the same time zone and I have the driver page pulled up for Australia but sometimes these are done in regions so say for instance you were in say Papua or Russia then it could be and I say could be a different download site.

This is for where I am http://www.sony.com.au/support/product/VPCL218FG

But before we go there have you access to a wired mouse or even another wireless to see if the same thing happens?

Have several extra wireless mice and am using one now. Doesn't slide so smoothly but so far no jumping around. Had to sacrifice a USB port. I did intend to look to see if there is a new driver for the Sony one, which doesn't need a USB port.

    Location: I am in Oz.

Oh well then stony go to BIG W and get one of those Zipp three port USB powered hubs mate for I think it was $12 in fact probably K Mart would be even cheaper you don't have to sacrifice anything and plus you are not constantly connecting the motherboard port and avoid breaking or wearing it out - had someone the other day with that problem - loose almost broken port solved by a simple hub:)

There seems to be several messages missing (?). But I am replying to your last one re USB hubs. I have a couple but won't use either with this Win 7 machine. Just needed to take off an extra DVD drive that annoyingly needs two ports.

Re mouse movement, there have now been a couple of jumps away. This is widely recorded online, especially by authors and the like who earn a living on their computers and don't take kindly to this erratic behaviour. A couple said that a driver uograde eradicated it. Sony's site doesn't show one on a first look. Typically poor site from a manufacturer.

    Remote Access?

Remember the scene in "Poltergeist" where the neighbours are battling with their remote controls?
Maybe someone is connecting to your PC and screwing around with it.

Does the problem occur, if you ARE NOT connected to a network (i.e. if you disable the network adapters on your PC)?
Is Remote Desktop disabled (System Properties > Remote tab)?

    Hello again

    Busy yesterday.

Re the grey box, I meant to refer to a discussion about this very annoyance. See There is this blue arrow in a box

Apparently this damned thing can be blue as well and seems to be mouse related. No help really, because, as frequently occurs for me, my Control Panel headings and contents don't match those of the poster or posters. At least with a Mac you get one OS, or I assume you do. Who's to blame: MS or OEM? It's a curse.

The cursor jumping around occurred with both Sony and MS mouses, so have switched back to Sony.

I will try to look today for possible updated driver for Sony mouse. Will be out and about, as I was yesterday.

Welcome lehnerus2000. I have turned off remote assistance. Had to turn it on several months ago and forgot to turn it off again!! Won't stop the grey box, but might stop the frequent bursts on the screen. No it hasn't! So what are these damned things?
