Its most likely some crap Sony installed on the machine. Having never used a computer from Sony I couldn't tell you what it is. But if you were to uninstall everything that was installed by Sony...

I have had two goes at saying that Sony has taken a long time to get into action as the computer is more than two years old, but the screen has jumped to another 7forums thread each time and I have lost the text of my reply. This also has been reported and is probably part of the mouse thing. I am leaning towards having a computer shop whiz I use to have a look. Perhaps even to do a Windows repair.

Do the repair yourself stony the tech see you coming!!

Why not stick in a new hard drive get an OEM and install just the OS and then drag what you want back off the old drive. It's going to cost you half that to get the tech to look at it anyway and that is without bits.

Good chance to SSD the thing and use the other drive as an external drive / data backup type set up.

I vowed years ago to stop messing about with the innards of PCs. It seems best to have a respected troubleshooter look at these strange happenings. I got rid of two annoyances simply by turning off something that I didn't need. Someome else may be able to suggest a similarly easy way to get rid of the rest. I also have the option of calling in one of my technically minded PC users group mates to have a look as well. I posted on this forum in the hope that others had the same problems and could suggest remedies that wouldn't involve taking the PC apart.

Amazingly I have keyed this post without a mouse cursor jump. Got one grey box though!

Is it only happening in your web browser?

I read an article about malware infecting web browsers.
I got the impression that it was similar to the way root kits work on operating systems.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe there is a hardware problem with your touchscreen and/or mouse.
Maybe there is a dodgy connection between the input devices and the motherboard.
Heat or vibration maybe be triggering the weird behaviour.

I get mouse jumps in both websites (such as this) and in computer-based software (such as Windows Live Mail 2011). Haven't looked at Word or publishing/graphics programs. The question to be grappled with is whether one thing is causing all the mayhem or whether the popups are separate things. I have been thrown out three times to WLM but when I have returned this text has been intact. I will seek local help, both unpaid and, if necessary, paid, after Easter.

Best wishes to Adelaide, the town of my birth! I am in Canberra now.

I am not sure what has happened but suddenly everything has settled down. I haven't had a mouse skip or strange popup or burst for 24 hours. Despite this improved situation, I dropped in yesterday afternoon to see one of the techs I have used in the past to get his opinion. He said to clean the screen thoroughly as grime can cause the touchscreen to play up. I had already cleaned the screen twice since I banned my grandsons from this machine. Nevertheless I again cleaned it. Today (Good Friday) I have seen no unwelcome visitors. Of course, I have run anti-malware programs several times and perhaps, despite checking and reporting nothing untoward, they might have removed something. But it looks like dirt on the touchscreen could have been causing strange behaviour and somehow it suddenly stopped doing so. I have even turned the Tablet PC input Panel back on and no popup icons have ensued.

The weird thing is that most of the strange behaviour I was having is widely reported online with various solutions suggested, and in the end I didn't have to do anything to stop it. But I hope I am not being overconfident.

Many thanks for everyone's interest in this situation.
