Windows 7: stopping unrequested grey box with word next and two arrows in it

At the beginning of my initial post I referred to 'my Win 7 touchscreen all-in-one'. Later, on request, the PC was identified by Sony model number, which also should have helped identify it as a touchscreen model. Most, if not all, Sony all-in-ones seem to be touchscreen.

The dirty touchscreen explanation as the cause of my problems is only conjecture in my opinion. There may be another explanation for my PC suddenly going nuts and then suddenly going sane again. I believe that the screen was fairly clean when the popups and other crazies started. The puzzling thing is that most of the behaviours I experienced have been reported online seemingly as individual conditions. I managed to get everything at once.

Thank you stony41 for pointing that out to me. I surly missed the obvious in your first post and I read it several times. My apologies.
Please let us know if the problem comes back after the screen has been cleaned. I must say that a dirty screen on a touch screen has never entered my mind. It will be a good thing for me to remember. I have learned something, thank you.
