This is where your way of thinking will only harm you going forward. Don't automatically believe the hype from the "it's cool to hate Windows 8' crowd. I've been using it since it's release, and it's actually a very good OS, once you install a Start Menu replacement app. There is absolutely NO reason to be afraid of Windows 8.

Now, I'm not bashing Windows 7, as that is also a very good OS, so I am not telling you or anyone else that they should upgrade right now, but there's no reason to fear the upgrade. I put it off on one of my three computers until I did a major system upgrade, as I would have done a clean install of the OS anyway. It was a good time to make the switch, and I haven't looked back.

Yea I kind of wish I got the upgrade when it was $39.00, now it is $199.00. I could have always dual booted with 7.

DeaconFrost is right, Windows 8 is a good OS once you get a useable Start Menu back (I use Start8 from Stardock). I bought two $40 licenses when it was available because it was too cheap not to.

I've been using it off and on since the first Customer Preview version. I removed it and put Windows 7 back on twice before making a permanent move to Windows 8 two or three months ago. On my old, reliable Dell Precision 370 3.4Ghz P4 with 4GB of ram (max it can take) running Windows 8 Pro X64 it is fast and solid. I also migrated to a 128GB SSD during those switches and it has worked perfectly under Win 7 and 8.

I don't use any of the Metro/Modern apps but I like to peak at the Metro/Modern desktop once in a while just to remind myself how much I dislike it.

Windows 8 start screen is not that bad, can't get the point why people are using 3rd party stuff. The fact that Windows boots directly into the start screen is dissapointing though.

And don't believe the hype from the "it's cool to pretend that change is always good, even when it isn't. And it's cool to bash people who don't get with the program, and call them 'afraid of change' and luddites." Feh.

You know, actually the Windows 8 Desktop experience works fine for me. I used to use a start menu replacement, but decided to try to work with the start screen, and it's really not a problem. Most of my regularly used stuff is pinned to the task bar anyway. Most of the under-the-hood changes are either positive or un-noticeable (by me, anyway).

No, the problem I have with the Win8 Desktop is that it is butt ugly. The flat/squared-off/non-customizability is actually a show-stopper for me, and I went back to Windows 7.

Oh well, I'm only out $40, and I did have some fun learning it and playing around with it. No doubt I will again

No one brought that up but you. The majority of the people bashing Windows 8 have never even used it, or given it any real length of time. Most people who do, realize that it is a good OS, even if they prefer Windows 7. For me, I don't really spend my time staring at my boxes, so non-rounded corners on windows don't really bother me that much. It does look "flatter" than Windows 7 screens, but that isn't a make or break feature on an OS for me. It boots faster for me, and has some added functionality to the Task Manager that would far out-weigh any minor graphical changes for me personally.

I was obviously directly responding in kind to your "don't believe the hype" crack, so don't give me the "no one brought that up but you" stuff.

As far as the majority of people bashing Windows 8 never using it, etc., I don't think that's true.

Yes, it's personal preference, that is all. The benefits do not outweigh the negatives. For me. That's what I was saying.

If you have had a look at windows blue (so far ) - MS are moving futher away from their users.

It isn't the finished product, so we can't be sure yet.

Microsoft as a company has two roads to travel on this subject.
Make a product that draws people to the product OR force people to the product. I think they are on the fence at the present time. Trying this and that and see what happens.

I can't remember a time that Microsoft has ever stated publicly of ever making a product that wasn't great.

I can see something like this coming from Microsoft.

**Because of the wonderful response we have received from our customers of Windows 8 who use personal computers we have decided to improve on the all ready wonderful personal computing experience and user friendly methods and go to a new higher level of user friendly for our great customer who use Windows 8 on their personal computers at home and work.**

Then I believe we will get a choice of the look and use of a cell phone or the use and look of a PC.
At least this is my hope.

We don't want any of those ignorant, arrogant comments claiming there is something wrong with people who like\do not like 8.

There has been an unfortunate tendency for 8 lovers to make ludicrous claims about scared of change , not able to learn, etc.

Change is not always for the better. It is not always for the benefit of the customer. The insistence of a few that everybody must do what a large corporation wants is bordering on insanity.

    Period.

A "crack"? If you think that was just a crack about hype, you've missed a lot of very entertaining threads.

There has been the same, if not more people making wild claims and bashing the people who happen to like Windows 8. It's the Vista release all over again, except some of the initial Vista fear was justified thanks to very slow OEM support. Remember the Mojave Project? It was all about exposing and separating hype/rumors from facts.

Warnings should be given for people bashing on either side...not just one. The "change" comments aren't usually relevant, either. I don't think anyone switched just because it was new. If so, that's an awful decision process. New isn't always better. But by the same taken, new isn't always worse, either, and that's often forgotten.

There have been dozens of threads on here alone (not counting eightforums.com) where people would go on a tirade about how awful Windows 8 was and only morons would consider using it....only to have the OP later admit they've heard it was bad from their mother's, neighbor's barber, and have never actually used it themselves.
