Downloads always freeze randomly since upgrading to fibre.

Never had a problem before with downloading anything until I upgraded my connection to 40meg fibre, but since the day of activation I have a strange issue that downloads will randomly freeze and refuse to resume or complete.
I get no time out error, just a progress bar that does not move, however it will still show a 'time remaining' and a download speed that reflects the status of the download from before it stopped working.
I can rule out the isp as the issue is not present on my other 2 desktop computers, my laptop, smart tv and a selection of phones which all connect to the same router.

The problem is also not limited to any particular type of download, it happens not only in firefox, chrome and IE but also things like Steam and Origin game downloads, streaming video, youtube videos etc.

Is there possibly any common issue that this could be? The issue did begin after the new connection was activated but of course there is every chance this is unrelated.

Generally small files a few mb in size complete successfully before the problem manifests, but I can almost guarantee it will happen at some point with anything over a few hundred mb.

When the downloads stop working, everything else functions normally, web pages still load, no error messages are recieved and simply canceling the download and restarting will commence the download again with no issue (until it decides to freeze up again)

Is that still a thing? I havent had to mess with mtu settings since dial up :)
I'm going to hold out till the weekend before I can have the time to mess with that so any other suggestions are welcome.

It would only be a thing if some app really barfed the settings.
