Thanks Tom, that did the trick... not sure if it didn't work before because I closed the command prompt before I rebooted? Or did I have to reboot from within the command prompt for it to work? Not sure... but in any case, Chkdsk log follows:

Please wait while your computer restarts.

So there you have it. No disk errors found. In addition I've provided a couple of screenshots of the file in question, with everything else in the Downloads folder cleared out to make it easy to see what is going on.

Hi Greg,

That's great, thanks for the log. chkdsk hasn't picked up any problems which is good and bad I suppose, time to try something new!

I would like to try one more small thing before we move onto a more powerful tool. Can you download and install Unlocker please?

UNLOCKER 1.9.1 BY CEDRICK 'NITCH' COLLOMB

Make sure you enable the context menu setting when installing it. When it finishes installing, right click on that file and delete it with Unlocker. You can uninstall Unlocker when you have finished this, whether it worked or not.

Tom

P.S. I've only just realised your username is Gregory backwards!

I believe he only sees the file through Explorer, not in the directory itself. A Guy

I don't know if this will help, but I have had to use this in the past for virus deletion: Pocket KillBox - Delete files

This program allows you to enter a filename path and it can either stop it and delete it, or delete it on reboot or delete and replace with a dummy file (which then could actually be deleted)

If he can see it in explorer, he can right click on it and use the unlocker context menu

Sorry it took me so long to reply, I wanted to make sure the change stuck... but unlocker worked!! The file was erased from all of Windows' records and has now disappeared completely. Rebooted and it has not yet returned. Problem solved! Thank you to all who assisted, especially Tom!

Wondering if any of you have seen this oddity? :sarc: My working theory is to blame MS ... haha - my guess being that a general update of Live Essentials/Live-Mail caused the non-permanetly-deleted messages to be 'unmarked' as deleted At any rate the symptom is simple: suddenly "out of the...

Hosts file disappeared
Hi, I have no hosts file. I just went to create a new one and went to save it in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc but a dialog box popped up telling me hosts already exists and whether it wants me to overrwrite it. Thought this was odd because there's nothing there called hosts. Any ideas?
