It may not have worked nilank if he has too many icons. He may have a monitor with a 4:3 resolution instead of a wide screen 16:9 .
Actually he said he has enough "free space" on his desktop for more icons, so I thought... Seems like he got this solved.

Dick, you are kindly requested to post the solution so that it could help other members out there.
I believe you may have missed the question I asked and it's unanswered as well.

I understand what DicK H meant. That is everything should remain where it should be. Not auto arrange, or arrange by name, arrange by date, arrange by what so ever. Windows 7 sure gives all of us pain in the neck! after staring after the screen trying to solve some stupid problems that cropped up all the time. What can't they allow us to lock the system just like the lock taskbar function?.

Looks like everything is in 1 big folder. That is what explorer .exe is all about.

if i were the Op i would use fences 2 ,he can have sets of icons how he likes them ,title the groups and with fences 2 you can have different windows that drag , almost like swiping to a new screen on a smartphone, you can have a folder open and hidden also,
plus you have the bonus of seeing a decent wallpaper and resting your eyes when you are using the pc for fun and not work.
the beauty of fences 2 is that it can restore the desktop icons the way you had them as a back up.
you dont need to have sets or groups of icons you could have one large one just like the desktop itself but have the back up snaps to recreate the arrangement when suits.

Does anybody know what the OP has or has not tried and what the results were?
    Is the OP fixed?
Dick this has to be a two way street. For us to make sure all the help we have to share is working or not.

As cyrilhubert just said, the problem is that Windows 7 does not let us do things the way WE want. The C:\users\name BS is very bothersome. There is no solution to our problem unless we go back to XP, and that thing constantly crashes. The reason I checked "solved" is because I do not want to continue this endless discussion. PLEASE stop posting here.

May be the worst OP I have ever seen out of tens of thousands. Would not lift a finger to try anything even as we all tried to help.

My compliments to all of those who demonstrated how hard we will try here to help even the hopeless. You generosity of spirit has helped make us the top tech forums on the web.

You see here the most perfect example of what we face as a nation with a full third of our population and the way they react to evolved civilization.
