Windows 7 - That good? Windows 7 is awesome, we all know that. Good enough to the point where it will give PC's a better name. But is it really THAT good as all of the people at microsoft and other big review sites say it is? We will only find out within several days. | My System Specs |

Had the Vista release not gone as poorly....I don't think there would be quite so much hype over Windows 7. Vista has improved significantly with service packs and other patches...but it took some time to get there. But there is no doubt that Windows 7 is an improvement across the board on just about any level of hardware....even the lower-end stuff that would have been crushed under Vista. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Self-Built in July 2009 OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Intel Q9550 2.83Ghz OC'd to 3.40Ghz Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R rev. 1.1, F12 BIOS Memory 8GB G.Skill PI DDR2-800, 4-4-4-12 timings Graphics Card EVGA 1280MB Nvidia GeForce GTX570 Sound Card Realtek ALC899A 8 channel onboard audio Monitor(s) Displays 23" Acer x233H Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard ABS M1 Mechanical Mouse Logitech G9 Laser Mouse PSU Corsair 620HX modular Case Antec P182 Cooling stock Hard Drives Intel X25-M 80GB Gen 2 SSD

I have observed that Windows 7 gets more praise from people coming from XP than people who lived well with Vista. For smaller systems, Windows 7 is a definite improvement. For bigger, more muscular systems, there is a smaller gain. Windows 7 is definitely more stable than Vista was at the beginning - but it is not more stable than Vista is today. The main cause of the Vista instability were device drivers. That problem seems to be pretty much ironed out and Windows 7 benefits from the Vista groundwork.
I would not go as far as calling Windows 7 "awsome" - especially since some nice Vista features were dropped and some of the components (e.g. WMM) seem to be a step backwards. But all in all it looks like a good base for becoming a successful OS - over time. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP, Dell, Gateway, Toshiba - 4 laptops and 2 desktops OS Vista, Windows7, Mint Mate, Zorin, Windows 8 CPU from 1.6GHz Duo to i7 Monitor(s) Displays 2x HP w2207 Keyboard with trackball - no mices Mouse Trackball mice Hard Drives 5x HDD, 7x SSD, 12x Externals Internet Speed DSL 6000 |

Vista is a very good operating system now that they have reached the "Wait for SP1" level and even SP2. There are still things about Vista that seem glued together rather than a smooth fit.
Windows 7 is smooth, clean, and gives the impression that some actual thought went into it rather than pushing it out too soon.
If I were to boil my feelings about Windows 7 down to one statement I would say that it "Feels properly tuned and responsive".
Yes it is that good. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Systemax N2000 Gaming PC OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Q6600 @2.4ghz (G0 stepping) Motherboard XFX nforce 680i LT Memory 8 gb OCZ vista essential sli PC-6400 Graphics Card Dual 9800gt in SLI mode Sound Card Integrated 8.1 High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays Dual Sceptre x246w 24 inch monitors Screen Resolution 1920 x 1200 each monitor Keyboard MS Intelitype 6000 v2.0 Mouse MS Intelipoint 6000 PSU Cooler Master Real Power Pro 1250W Case N2000 server tower Cooling Thermaltake Bigwater 760 is Hard Drives 500 GB SATA II / 7500 rpm Internet Speed Wi-power 1.5GB up / 512k down Other Info Windows 7 Ultimate x64, Windows 7 Pro x64, Windows Home Premium X86, Windows XP pro, Windows Home Server x86, Ubuntu 10.4 x86 and x64, Ubuntu server 10.4, SQL Server 2005, MySQL 5.0 |

Windows 7 is great! I snagged my copy from the launch event and have been using it since 9/28. Aside from a bad flash drive that gave me trouble things have been running flawlessly.
In fact if I open the Event Viewer, for the last 7 days there isnt one single error. Only a couple TCPIP warnings and another related to a print server.
Performance and reliability. I love it. Vista ran solid for me as well. But after a week I would have at least 3 or 4 errors in the EV.

The things I miss from Vista

Disk4mat,
Welcome to the "Seven Forums."
Also, thank you for taking the time to fill out your system specs.
As a beta tester, and now checking out the Win 7 Enterprise Version for IT professionals there is no doubt in my mind that Win 7 is the best Windows OS, since NT 3.xx. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP Pavilion a4302f OS Win 7 Pro x64, VM Win XP, Win7 Pro Sandbox, Kubuntu 11 CPU AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 640 @ 3.0 Gbz Memory 12GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB, 2x2GB Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 4350 HD Graphics/Audio with 512MB Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio Monitor(s) Displays 1. For me, I don't know if it's the jump from XP to 7 or from 32 to 64bit or a combination of both, but the increase in performance, and self management for registry, etc, is very very substantial.
I'm actually quite surprised. | My System Specs | | OS Win 7 Ultimate x64 CPU Intel i7 950 OC'd @ 4.0Ghz (SpeedStep ON) Motherboard ASUS P6X58D-E BIOS 0303 Memory 3x2GB Patriot Extreme Viper II Sector 7 DDR3 @ 1600mhz Graphics Card ATI MSI 5870 900mhz/1300mhz Sound Card Onboard Realtek ALC889 Monitor(s) Displays 2 X 24" BenQ G2412HD Screen Resolution 1920x1080p Keyboard Razer Lycosa Mouse Microsoft Sidewinder PSU Corsair AX850 Case Antec 1200 Cooling Lots and Lots of Air! At the end of the day I am very happy with 7. This is my first post so please forgive my rambling I highly recommend giving the free Faststone Image Viewer a try as a replacement for Windows native photo viewer/editor. I have set it as my default photo viewing app so photos open in Faststone when I click on them. It does a lot more than just viewing (but I use other apps for editing). However, it is awesome at instantly displaying images and can be customized to perform exactly as you might prefer. For example, when I click on photos, I like images to open in full screen and to be able to zoom in and out using just the scroll wheel and was able to configure Faststone behave this way.
One of the many cool things about Faststone is that the menus available on 3 edges of the screen while viewing images are hidden until one moves the mouse to one of the edges of the screen and then the menu on that edge flies out. So one can view images fullscreen without any menus in the way, yet they are instantly available when needed. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP DV8t quad OS Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (Retail) CPU i7-Q 720 Motherboard Motherboard Chipset Intel Ibex Peak-M PM55, Intel Lynnfield Memory 6 GB Graphics Card nVidia GeForce GT 230M (1GB) Sound Card IDT High Definition Audio CODEC Monitor(s) Displays 18.4 inch HP Infinity FHD (Samsung 184HT03-001) Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 Keyboard laptop Mouse Logitech VX Revolution Cooling Zalman NC-2000 notebook cooling pad Hard Drives Hitachi 500GB 7200 rpm (x2)
