Autoplay help

I wasent sure where to put this so i just picked here, sorry if its the wrong spot!

Hi,
I just upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows vista and now i have an annoying problem:

Previously when ever i plugged in a USB drive or turn one on it would automatically open up to the folder without no autoplay box popping up but now in win 7 the box always pops up even after i set all the options to open up folder in windows explorer:

Plugged it in:

Autoplay settings:

Plugged it back in:
The same as the first image it still pops up, i just want it to open the drive folder automatically whenever i pop in a USB drive or turn on an external drive. Any ideas?

Thanks!

hmmm...looks like it's forgetting it's settings. set them back to default, plug in a drive, if you get the option tick "always do this for..." if not go back into autoplay and change the settings again

I set them to defaults but when i plug the usb stick back in the autoplay comes up bit doesn't have a "always do this for" option just open folder. At the time i only have .rars in the USB but that's what i mostly always have .

there must be a registry entry that controls it that you could set. Im sure someone will think of it

good luck

Hi there

In Windows 7 USB autoplay is DELIBERATELY disabled as this used to be a HUGE security risk and a major method in transmitting viruses.

Some youngster (or even not so youngster) would download some (usually pirated music) from a torrent site on to a USB stick and take it to work to play it. The torrent could install a nasty little virus that was auto started when the USB stick was attached to the "victim" computer.

There might be a method of enabling USB Autoplay but you open yourself up to a potential can of worms here if you attempt to do it.

I don't think it's "Normal user" configurable --you'll probbably need a registry hack or some obscure "Admin policy" setting. The tutorial in the previous post might work but I would advise against using this.

Cheers
jimbo.

Remember Conflicker? Autoplay USB drives is one of the ways it used to infect machines. So Microsoft disabled that functionality, for the better anyways.

AutoPlay - Enable or Disable AutoRun
Thanks for the reply and i was sure this would solve my problem but it doesn't seem to of done anything.

I tried method 1 which was already done on my machine:

and i also did method 2:

but this is what happens when i plug in the usb drive still:

also i really love 7's new "snipping" program very simple and easy without using snagit or something similar.
