Occasionally wont load past "Starting Windows" screen

Last night, I attempted to install a linux distro alongside 7, the installation failed, so I gave up and just rebooted to 7.

It got stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen, so I preformed hard shutdown and when to the "Startup Repair" utility and it attempted repairs, it then said that the repairs were unsuccessful, so I restarted and windows loaded to the desktop. Success! or so I thought...

After a while, I shut my laptop down and went to bed (as you do). When I needed to use it this morning, it wouldn't load past the "Starting Windows" screen again, so I shut it down and restarted and it went the desktop.

    Hi,

Can you access the Advanced boot options?

    Advanced Boot Options
    Choose Last known Good Configuration

       Tip
Use the up-arrow and down-arrow keys to move the menu’s highlight to Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced), and then press Enter as the mouse won’t work at this screen.

Your computer should load successfully, and Windows 7 will discard the bad configuration and return permanently to the last known good configuration.

    Alternatively:

Are you able to restore back to a point to before you tried to install linux distro?

    System Restore

    Cheers

Hey Dave, thanks for your reply.

I've restarted it a few times today and the problem hasn't reoccurred. Do these problems usually sort themselves out? (It sounds odd even saying it.)
Seeing as the problem has "gone away", would you still advise preforming the actions you specified?

    Thanks.

You only need to perform the actions i specified if it happens again.
I would just monitor the situation for a while and see if it reoccurs
Also I would create a new restore point.

Then run SFC to check the integrity of all Windows 7 system files:
    • Click on Start > Type in search cmd
Right-click cmd after results are displayed and Run as Administrator
Type SFC /scannow at the prompt
(Note: There is a space between SFC and /scannow) SFC Tutorial

       Note
Select option two. If any problems are found, run the scan 3 times and immediately
reboot the computer after each scan.

    Post back any results.

    cheers
