Why can't I change my desktop or add a new user in Win7 Pro x64?

Hi. I'm newto this forum. I recently handed my laptop to the company computer gimp because he had to set me up on the company domain. He has done this, but I cannot change my desktop or add a new user in the control panel. I am wondering what else has been done. It also requires admin privileges for new installs, but mine is an admin account. On the local profile, I can change my desktop, but I can't add a new user (the option has been removed from control panel user accounts). On the network profile, I cannot do anything, yet I am admin. Is there a way to remove these restriction, certainly on the local profile. Is there a way to see the most recent changes to the system and undo these? Does it have anything to do with the isa firewall and its config (I think not because nothing changes when I disbale it). Any thoughts on how to regain FULL control of my Lenovo laptop with WIN 7 x64? Thanks.

Minim, Welcome to the windows 7 forum.

Your system administrator has joined your computer to their domain where the features are disabled for regular users. You might think your an admin but something tells me that it is not a true admin.

Have you talked to the system admin about your problem?
They might have a really good reason to not allow you to add users as when your on a domain, the Active Directory has control of users and priv's.

The only way to regain full control of your laptop is to wipe and start over but then your going to get into trouble with your administration.

Best to talk to the admins.

Thanks for the response. The thing is that its my personal laptop so surely I should be able to regain full control, even if only on the local account? If I leave the domain, will I regain control? Are the permissions conditions for being on the domain? I will chat to my administrator on Monday, but I don't like being told what to do, especially seeing as the laptop is my own. Can I not have a seperate profile with 'real admin' and then the profile for the domain? Local vs domain, seeing as I have two log-ins?

Minim, the Domain rules are installed on your computer when the network admin joined your computer to the domain. You most likely will not be able to unjoin from the domain. Only a domain admin can do that.

Looks like your only option if you can't get the domain admin to unjoin you to the domain, is to do a re-install.
But there could be a couple of other options that I am not familiar with.

Google is your friend.

Sometime last week, Windows 7 on my main PC changed its startup behaviour. Instead of booting up straight to the desktop as it alsways used to, it boots to the list-of-users screen, requiring me to click on the only account icon (there is only one 'admin' account, which has no password). Only then...
